Exploring the ancient art of Falconry is a unique experience that few people get to enjoy. Upon our arrival, Peter, a seasoned falconer, greeted us with stories that bridged the past with the present, illustrating not just the history of the sport but the dynamic and demanding nature of falconry. We learned about the different types of falcons, their specific hunting methods, and the intensive care they require. Peter encouraged everyone to ask questions, providing rich, detailed answers that reflected his deep connection with the birds.
The Tour Begins
Our day began in Peter’s garage where he shared fascinating insights into the rigorous training regimens and the dedication required to nurture these birds. He explained the falcons’ diet, their growth from hatchlings to fully-fledged hunters, and the intricate molting process they undergo annually.

Interactive Falcon Encounters
The highlight was undoubtedly the hands-on experience. Each of us donned a handler’s glove to feel the weight of a Gyrfalcon, the largest falcon species, perching on our arm. Peter’s expertise and passion transformed this interaction into a remarkable encounter, enriching our understanding of these birds as more than just predators but as partners to their falconers.
Outdoor Demonstrations
We then stepped outside onto the lawn where Athena, the Harris Hawk, demonstrated her incredible agility and precision. Flying from her perch to our gloved hands, she showcased the hunting prowess that Peter had so vividly described. Her nearly 6-foot wingspan and powerful flight were nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Falcon Training and Partnership
Peter shared stories of specific birds, like the challenges and triumphs of training his falcons to hunt mid-flight and the careful balance he maintains to keep them keen yet cooperative. He touched upon the symbiotic relationship between falconer and bird, emphasizing how falcons are not just trained but also understood on an almost personal level.
Birds of Prey Up Close
This unique experience allowed everyone to get up close and personal with three great birds of prey – a Gyrfalcon, an American Kestrel, and a Harris Hawk. It also provided an immersive education on their behavior, habitats, and the art of Falconry. I’ll never forget the thrill of being able to interact with these majestic creatures, and it’s something you won’t soon forget either!

Strategic Hunting Skills
As the afternoon waned, we witnessed a demonstration of the falcons’ hunting skills, where Peter detailed their ability to manage their energy and diet—how they could distinguish between the weight of food offerings and the effort required in a hunt.
Farewell to the Birds
Before we bid farewell, Peter headed to his vehicle with a falcon for a mission at the local airport to control the bird population, highlighting another aspect of falconry: its role in managing wildlife and ensuring safety in commercial spaces.
