About This Experience
This inland excursion from Puerto Vallarta featured a scenic drive into the Sierra Madre to explore San Sebastián del Oeste, a preserved colonial mining town. Guests visited a local tequila distillery, explored cobbled streets, and toured 18th-century landmarks. Moderate walking on uneven surfaces; rural terrain throughout.
✨ Into the Sierra Madre Highlands
The day began in Puerto Vallarta, where we boarded a modern, air-conditioned motor coach for a guided excursion into the mountains. Our route followed Carretera a Las Palmas, gradually ascending through the scenic foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, a prominent mountain range that stretches along western Mexico and plays a crucial role in the region’s climate and biodiversity.
After about one hour, we made a brief restroom stop at Restaurante El Puente de Cristal and Panadería, located adjacent to the El Progreso Bridge, a major crossing over the San Sebastián River Gorge along Federal Highway 70. The adjoining bakery offered a limited selection of breads and pastries, while the dramatic views of the bridge and gorge provided a scenic pause before continuing our ascent.

After approximately two hours of driving, we arrived at San Sebastián del Oeste, a historic mining town founded in 1605. Once a thriving silver center, today it houses fewer than 600 residents and preserves much of its colonial character, with narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed adobe buildings, and stone structures dating to the 18th and 19th centuries.
🏵️ Cultural Insight: San Sebastián del Oeste is designated as a Pueblo Mágico—an honor awarded by Mexico’s tourism board to towns that preserve cultural heritage, historical architecture, and natural beauty.
☕ Stop 1: Café de Altura La Quinta Mary
📍 Location: General Aguirre #110, Centro, 46990 San Sebastián del Oeste, Jalisco, Mexico
⏳ Time Spent: Approximately 30 minutes
Our first stop introduced us to the high-altitude coffee culture of the region. At Café de Altura, a small-batch coffee producer at the edge of town, we explored the full bean-to-cup process. A local staff member guided us through the stages of cultivation, harvesting, drying, and roasting, highlighting how elevation and climate affect the flavor profile of the beans. Grown in the mineral-rich volcanic soil of the Sierra Madre at elevations above 4,000 feet, these beans develop slowly, concentrating their oils and sugars for a smoother, more complex cup.

We had the opportunity to taste their signature roast, prepared on-site using traditional brewing methods. The flavor was smooth and slightly nutty, with low acidity—a hallmark of mountain-grown coffee. In addition to coffee, the farm offered tastings of locally made agave liqueur, an artisanal product that ties into the region’s broader agricultural heritage. Bottles were available for purchase, providing visitors a chance to take home a flavor of Jalisco.
🫘 Agricultural Note: San Sebastián’s high elevation and volcanic soil create ideal growing conditions for slow-ripening coffee beans, enhancing their flavor and aroma—qualities especially valued by specialty roasters.
🏛️ Stop 2: San Sebastián Historic Center & Church
📍 Location: Calle Juárez #1, Centro, 46990 San Sebastián del Oeste, Jalisco, Mexico
⏳ Time Spent: Approximately 20 minutes
We continued on foot into the historic center of San Sebastián del Oeste, where the town’s main plaza and its landmark church anchor the colonial layout. At the center stood the Iglesia de San Sebastián Mártir, a stone-built church from the 18th century. Inside, we observed its baroque-style altar, vaulted ceilings, and thick masonry—hallmarks of Spanish colonial architecture adapted for remote mountain regions.

The plaza outside was quiet and shaded, bordered by low-rise buildings with tiled roofs and covered porticos. These included old civic structures and former residences, many of which date back to the town’s mining heyday. Despite the current population of fewer than 600, the preserved scale and form of its center reflect its historical significance.

📰 Historical Insight: During the 1800s, San Sebastián del Oeste was a prominent silver mining town with over 20,000 residents, serving as a key economic and cultural outpost in the Sierra Madre.
🎭 Stop 3: Doña Conchita’s Museum
📍 Location: Calle Juárez #2, Centro, 46990 San Sebastián del Oeste, Jalisco, Mexico
⏳ Time Spent: Approximately 30 minutes
A short walk from the central plaza brought us to the Museo Doña Conchita Encarnación, housed within a colonial-era residence that has remained in the same family for generations. The museum is a privately maintained collection curated by Doña Conchita, whose family lineage traces back to the early settlers of San Sebastián del Oeste.

Inside, are the preserved furnishings, photographs, handwritten correspondence, and personal items that tell the story of daily life in the town across multiple centuries. Doña Conchita personally guided us through the home, sharing historical anecdotes and family memories that gave intimate insight into the cultural and social evolution of the village. Her detailed knowledge and dedication to preserving heritage made the visit an especially rare opportunity to experience San Sebastián’s history through the lens of those who lived it.
📰 Social Heritage: This privately operated museum houses authentic heirlooms and documents passed down through generations, offering one of the most complete family histories in San Sebastián del Oeste.
🍽️ Stop 4: Hacienda Jalisco Lunch
📍 Location: Camino a San Sebastián del Oeste, La Estancia, 46990 San Sebastián del Oeste, Jalisco, Mexico
⏳ Time Spent: Approximately 1.5 hours
Lunch was served at Hacienda Jalisco, a historic estate on the outskirts of town. Under the shade of old trees, we enjoyed a rustic buffet featuring tamales wrapped in banana leaves, handmade tortillas, freshly baked breads, and traditional sweets. The cool mountain air, paired with the scent of roasting chiles, made for an unforgettable dining experience. We lingered over our plates, soaking in the relaxed rhythm of mountain hospitality.

🌮 Dining Legacy – Tamales in this region are often wrapped in banana leaves, creating a more fragrant, moist texture.
🥃 Stop 5: Hacienda Don Lalin
📍 Location: Jalisco Highway 544, La Estancia, San Sebastián del Oeste, Jalisco, Mexico
⏳ Time Spent: Approximately 45 minutes
After lunch, we reboarded the motor coach and departed San Sebastián del Oeste, beginning our journey back toward the coast. A short distance from town, we made a final stop at Hacienda Don Lalin, a rustic distillery located near the El Progreso Bridge along the road toward Mascota.

At Hacienda Don Lalin, we were greeted by Don Lalin himself, who demonstrated the traditional small-batch tequila-making process using handcrafted, home-scale equipment passed down through generations. His methods reflect a commitment to artisanal production, utilizing wood-fired ovens and natural fermentation techniques that have been honed over decades. This approach not only preserves the authentic flavors of the spirits but also upholds the cultural heritage of the region.

We sampled a variety of artisanal spirits, with the highlight being the Licor de Café—a sweet, smooth liqueur crafted from roasted coffee beans and agave syrup. Bottles were available for purchase, and many in our group seized the opportunity to bring home a unique flavor of rural Jalisco.
🌿 Craft Distilling Tip: Licor de Café is a coffee-based liqueur traditionally prepared in Jalisco households using agave syrup and locally sourced beans—often served as a digestif or poured over ice.
💙 Our Favorite Moment
Meeting Don Lalin for the first time left a lasting impression. His energy, enthusiasm for his craft, and genuine warmth toward every visitor made the stop unforgettable. Over the coming years, we would cross paths with Don Lalin again, and each encounter was marked by his contagious excitement for tequila-making and his joy in sharing it with others.
