An Unfolding Tale of Time and Legends
Nestled within the majestic Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve, Île Niapiskau stands as a timeless testament to both geological wonder and folklore. Here, stories are not told through words alone but are etched in the faces of the weathered rock formations that punctuate the island. Exploring this secluded haven is a true delight and a must-see if you’re in the area.
The Start of an Enigmatic Voyage
Our adventure began in Havre-Saint-Pierre, where the seamless docking of the Zaandam set the stage for what would be a day of discovery.

Alongside 50 fellow adventurers, we gathered at the pier and boarded a dual-hulled catamaran. Shortly after, we set off toward the heart of the Mingan Archipelago, where ancient landscapes and the whispers of legends awaited us.

Along the way, we took a leisurely detour by Île du Fantôme, or “Ghost Island”. Slowing our pace, we seized the opportunity to photograph its stunning, time-weathered limestone sculptures.

With our hunger for the beauty of Île du Fantôme satiated, our Catamaran resumed towards Île Niapiskau. Awaiting us there was a Parks Canada expert, poised to share the island’s tales.

As we stepped onto the island’s shores, one could almost feel the connection to a history stretching back over 500 million years.

We were promptly greeted by a Parks Canada interpreter whose knowledge would guide us through both the island’s geological origins and the poetic legacy that breathes life into its natural formations.

The island’s iconic limestone monoliths, shaped by relentless winds and tides, towered above us, some reaching heights of up to 10 meters. Among the most striking was the “Dame de Niapisca,” a figure that seems to embody the spirit of the island itself. Yet, even these ancient giants show signs of vulnerability. The monolith, in particular, bears a deep crack—a reminder that, over time, nature claims even the most formidable creations.

Geological Marvels and Poetic Legacy
The island’s allure lies not only in its geological history but also in the human stories it has inspired. The famed local poet Roland Jomphe immortalized these towering formations in verse, weaving their silent grandeur into the fabric of Quebec’s cultural heritage. His words echo through the island, as if the rocks themselves are reciting the poetry.
Trails Offering a Glimpse of Past and Present
Île Niapiskau offers two main trails, each providing a unique way to experience the island’s breathtaking beauty:
- Poète Jomphe Trail (0.3 km): A short loop trail that is perfect for those looking to get a quick immersion into the island’s beauty. Named after the poet Roland Jomphe, it promises a walk among the iconic limestone giants, some of which have inspired his verses.
- Samuel Trail (4.4 km): For those seeking a longer adventure, this trail circles the island, revealing both the towering limestone sculptures and the rich flora that thrives in their shadows. It’s an ideal route for moderate hikers, blending scenic beauty with a deeper exploration of the island’s diverse ecosystems.
A Stroll Through Legends
Our journey took us along the 0.3 km Poète Jomphe Trail, where we encountered an array of named monoliths—from the layered grace of the Wedding Cake to the towering presence of Cyrano, with its distinctive nose-like protrusion evoking the famed literary character. These stone figures seemed to morph into creatures like turtles and crocodiles, blending seamlessly into the natural surroundings of the verdant forest and rugged coastline.

As we continued, the avian world joined us. We learned about the Red Knot seabirds, which double their weight before their marathon migration to Brazil. The trail wove through diverse flora, with towering limestone formations, sculpted over millennia by the relentless sea, rising from the greenery.

The contrast between the island’s vibrant plant life and its ancient gray cliffs was striking, as if the island existed in two realms—one teeming with life, the other echoing a distant past. Near the trail’s end, the majestic limestone monoliths reappeared, standing like silent guardians of forgotten times.

Saying Goodbye, For Now
After an hour of exploring Île Niapiskau, we returned to the coast, where we sat in quiet reflection, watching the tide gently lap the shore. Across the water, the small, picturesque Île à Firmin beckoned, its silhouette framed against the horizon.

As our catamaran approached to take us back, we stole one last glance at the island’s monoliths, now etched forever in our memories.
