Northern Coast Chronicles of Quebec

Venturing forth on our bus ride, the northern coast began to unravel before our eyes. This breathtaking panorama painted a vivid narrative of Quebec, intertwining its picturesque landscapes with tales of its rich heritage and blossoming agricultural advancements.

Manicouagan Farm

Address: 793 Rue Granier, Pointe-Lebel QC G0H1N0
Time Spent: 50 minutes

Stepping off the bus at Manicouagan Farm, we were immediately greeted by the sights and smells of nature in full bloom. The fields stretched out in every direction, each row of crops a testament to the hard work and dedication of the farmers.

At the heart of this agricultural haven stood an astonishing 45,000 haskap plants—blueberry-like fruits that have carved a niche in the local food culture. These vibrant berries, however, were not the only stars of the show. Strawberries, raspberries, corn, and even hay swayed gently in the summer breeze, showcasing the farm’s commitment to diversity and abundance.

Rows of crops line the expansive Manicouagan Farm, showcasing the rich agricultural landscape nourished by dedicated farming.

The true essence of Manicouagan lay not only in its fertile fields but in the family who breathed life into this land. Their passion for agriculture was infectious as they eagerly shared stories of the haskap berry, a fruit that seemed to embody the very soul of the northern coast. Its flavor, a delightful fusion of sweet and tart, left a lasting impression on our taste buds—a reminder of frosty mornings warmed by berry-infused ice cream.

Educating visitors about the haskap berry’s rich history and its key role in foods and artisanal spirits.

The Haskap Berry: A Journey from Legend to Superfood

This remarkable berry, also known locally as Camerise, holds deep historical significance. Legends tell of the Viking explorers who, in their relentless quests, stumbled upon these nutrient-packed berries and considered them gifts from the gods. Today, the haskap berry stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of those early adventurers, offering a blend of flavors that is both refreshing and nostalgic. Manicouagan’s cool nights and sun-drenched days create the perfect environment for this superfood to thrive, further enriching its legacy.

Manicouagan’s Interpretation Center: A Farm-to-Table Experience

A short walk across the field led us to the interpretation center, a haven for those who cherish the farm-to-table philosophy. Here, fresh produce, harvested mere hours before, was available for tasting and purchase. The vibrant colors and crisp textures of the fruits and vegetables laid out before us reflected the farm’s unwavering commitment to quality. In this cozy space, nature’s bounty was celebrated, offering visitors an opportunity to connect directly with the land and the food it provides.

The Interpretation Center at Manicouagan Farm offers visitors insights into local agriculture and the benefits of farm-to-table produce.

Discovering the Art of Brewing at Manicouagan

Our exploration of Manicouagan Farm wasn’t just about fruits and vegetables. Vent du Nord Distillery, a family-operated gem within the farm, invited us into the world of craft gin-making, where the haskap berry played a pivotal role. The family walked us through the delicate balance of botanicals and distillation techniques, unveiling the secrets behind their artisanal spirits. The tasting session that followed was an experience in itself—a sensory journey where the subtle flavors of the berry intertwined with the sharpness of the gin, offering a true taste of the region’s innovative spirit.

A passionate presentation at Vent du Nord Distillery highlights the versatile haskap berry, integral to their craft spirits.

We also had the pleasure of attending a presentation by Microbrewery St Pancrace. Their expertise in brewing beer infused with local ingredients provided another layer of appreciation for the haskap berry’s versatility, as we sampled brews that reflected the unique characteristics of the northern coast.

Vent du Nord Distillery

Address: 40, avenue William-Dobell, Baie-Comeau, QC G4Z 1T4, Canada
Time Spent: 20 minutes

Manicouagan Farm, though bountiful, was just the start. As we ventured towards Vent du Nord Distillery, we became witnesses to a distillation process where tradition met innovation. The distillery, with walls bearing vintage photos, intricate copper stills, and cutting-edge machinery, was a tribute to the evolution of brewing.

St. Pancrace Microbrewery’s storefront invites locals and tourists to explore the rich tapestry of flavors brewed right on the farm’s grounds.

Unveiling Distilling Precision at Vent du Nord

Manicouagan Farm marked only the beginning of our journey. As we gathered once again on the bus and ventured toward Vent du Nord Distillery, the rustic charm of Quebec’s distilling tradition awaited us. The distillery itself, a harmonious blend of vintage aesthetics and modern innovation, stood as a testament to the evolution of the craft. Stainless stills gleamed under soft lighting, while walls adorned with historical photographs whispered stories of the past generations of brewers.

The Precision of Distilling at Vent du Nord

At the heart of the distillery, stood a fractionating column, embodying the fusion of tradition and technology. This towering apparatus, key to separating alcohol with pinpoint accuracy, ensured that every batch of spirits was crafted with care and precision. Vent du Nord’s dedication to sourcing local ingredients was equally impressive, with pristine waters and organic botanicals from the surrounding area enhancing the purity of their gin and other spirits. The distillery’s approach, rooted in authenticity and sustainability, added a deeper meaning to each sip.

Baie-Comeau: Place La Salle

Address: Baie-Comeau, QC, Canada, Quebec
Time Spent: 30 minutes

As the bus rolled into Baie-Comeau, we were greeted by a town rich with history and vibrant culture. Wandering through the town, we were immediately struck by the craftsmanship on display in the small storefronts—each shop telling its own story of local artisanship.

The bustling heart of the community, where local businesses thrive on the support of local and visiting patrons.

One of the town’s most enduring legacies is as the childhood home of Brian Mulroney, Canada’s former Prime Minister. Though our time was limited, the stories of his early life echoed in its streets as we explored the historic murals that adorned the walls of Baie-Comeau. These colorful artworks captured the town’s evolution, with each brushstroke a tribute to its journey.

A mural integrates the essence of Manicouagan’s rural beauty into the urban landscape, bridging city life with agricultural roots.

As we wrapped up our exploration of Baie-Comeau, the familiar sight of our bus greeted us, ready to carry us back to the pier. Our northern coast journey had come full circle, leaving us with vivid memories of the lush fields, artisanal brews, and the welcoming spirit of Quebec’s northern communities.

In Conclusion

From the fertile grounds of Manicouagan Farm to the refined craftsmanship of Vent du Nord Distillery, our exploration of Quebec’s northern coast revealed a deep connection between the land, its people, and their heritage. However, with the abundance of farm-fresh goods and locally crafted spirits at nearly every stop, our adventure often felt more like a shopping excursion than a traditional tour. So, it’s worth considering this as you shape your expectations.
