Onboard the Holland America Rotterdam:
On the 6th of April, we embarked on a remarkable transatlantic journey aboard the exquisite Rotterdam, a vessel that emanated elegance and sophistication in every detail. We settled into our Balcony Stateroom 5136, a tranquil oasis situated midship port on the Gershwin deck. While our balcony offered a unique view of the lifeboats rather than the open water, its position between two gaps seemed to shield us from the biting wind.

As we journeyed east, we observed that the starboard side was consistently sunny and dry, while the port side remained cold and damp. Thus, we concluded that the starboard side is the ideal choice when sailing in this direction.
On April 10th, 2023, a poignant moment marked our voyage as we paid tribute to the Titanic on its 111th anniversary. We halted over its final resting place for a solemn ceremony, observing a moment of silence and laying a wreath to honor the lives lost.

The Rotterdam, built in 2021, impressed us with its seamless blend of modern architecture and luxurious amenities. The onboard entertainment exceeded our expectations, featuring daily informative lectures by Bill Miller, the piano virtuosity of Elliot Finkel, comedic delights from Sid Davis, and the captivating vocal performances of Rebecca Kelly and the Tiny Little Big Band.

Our experience was further elevated by the exclusive Club Orange, which pampered us with private dining, expedited customer service, and our favorite Harvey & Sons Earl Grey Supreme Tea.

We were thrilled to see Park West’s return on board, attending their art seminars and auctions with enthusiasm. The days at sea seemed to pass effortlessly as Leslee and I developed a daily routine and celebrated our 27th anniversary with a delightful dinner at the Pinnacle Restaurant.
Leslee’s artistic pursuits flourished as she continued to master the art of painting, while we both enjoyed a shipwide scavenger hunt that spanned several days. Although the consistently cool weather of around 52 degrees limited our use of the balcony, we still appreciated having it available to us.

As the days passed, we found ourselves immersed in the elegance and sophistication of the ship, its state-of-the-art design ensuring that our every desire was catered to. Our days were filled with activities, laughter, and the forging of new friendships that we would treasure for years to come.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, our evenings took on a life of their own. We delighted in the finest entertainment, with music and merriment echoing through venues like Billboard, the Rolling Stone Rock Room, and BB King’s Blues Club. The melodic tunes enveloped us, creating an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie.

When we sought a change of pace, we found solace in watching movies by the pool under the canopy of stars. As the night progressed, we indulged in a newfound guilty pleasure – late-night pepperoni pizza. This delectable habit proved to be a challenge to break upon returning home, serving as a constant reminder of the unforgettable moments we shared aboard the ship.

As we approached the grand finale of our voyage, the significance of the occasion was palpable. The celebrations to mark Holland America’s 150th anniversary in Rotterdam promised to be a once-in-a-lifetime event, and we were honored to be a part of it.
Final Thoughts
It was during our enchanting cruise that we arrived at my favorite PORT OF CALL – the picturesque Dover in the United Kingdom. A sense of anticipation and wonder filled me as I eagerly set out to explore the charming town of Canterbury on foot.
As I meandered through the winding streets, I stumbled upon the captivating Westgate Park, nestled along the tranquil River Stour. I was instantly mesmerized by the park’s abundant flora, which painted the landscape in vibrant hues. A circular walking footpath seemed to beckon me, promising a delightful promenade through nature’s splendor.

However, time was not on my side, and the constraints of our tour schedule prevented me from embarking on that enchanting walk. A pang of longing lingered within me, yet it only fueled my resolve to return to Canterbury someday.
I vowed that I would come back, not only to retrace my steps through this delightful town but also to fully experience the serene beauty of Westgate Park. I would wander along its inviting footpath, immersing myself in the enchanting embrace of nature, and finally savor the experience that had so tantalizingly eluded me.
