Setting Sail: A South American Adventure Begins
In February 2025, we left behind the winter chill of Cincinnati, Ohio, for the vibrant summer of Buenos Aires, Argentina. A smooth 10-hour flight from Houston, Texas, carried us to the southern hemisphere, where the anticipation of an unforgettable adventure awaited. Boarding the Sapphire Princess, we eagerly looked forward to breathtaking landscapes, fascinating ports, and an incredible journey to the southernmost reaches of South America.
Though the journey to Buenos Aires was long, the Sapphire Princess’s overnight stay in the city provided the flexibility to settle in at a relaxed pace. Upon arrival at the airport, we received a warm welcome from a Princess Cruises representative, who ensured our time was well spent. Instead of waiting at the port, the cruise line arranged a scenic tour of Buenos Aires, allowing us to experience the city’s charm before embarkation. This unexpected excursion took us to the iconic La Boca district, where we strolled along the lively Caminito Street, soaking in the vibrant colors and energy of the city.
Embarking on the Sapphire Princess: A Smooth Start to Our Voyage
Upon arriving at the port, we waited approximately 45 minutes for our boarding group to be called. The embarkation process was smooth and well-organized, allowing us to seamlessly transition into cruise mode. While waiting for our stateroom to be ready, we took the opportunity to explore the ship’s inviting common areas and enjoy a bite to eat. By early afternoon, we settled into our stateroom, E425, on the Emerald Deck. Although classified as an ocean view with a fully obstructed view, we were pleasantly surprised to find that only a small lifeboat partially blocked our window, still allowing us an interesting glimpse of the port activity outside.
Our stateroom was cozy yet efficiently designed, making excellent use of the available space. A standout feature was the large, open closet, which offered exceptional storage flexibility compared to traditional shelving. While the cabin tended to stay warm, likely due to its location above the promenade deck doors, the ship provided a portable air conditioning unit to enhance our comfort. In the evenings, the lively atmosphere from the Explorer Lounge below added a touch of energy to the ambiance, with background music oftentimes carrying well into the evening.
Any minor inconveniences quickly faded in light of our excitement for the incredible journey ahead. The Sapphire Princess exuded timeless elegance, with a well-maintained atmosphere that never felt overcrowded. Its classic design and thoughtful layout made navigation effortless, enhancing our overall experience. A true highlight was the exceptional leadership of the captain, whose expertise and determination ensured we reached every scheduled port—even when faced with less-than-ideal conditions—making our voyage all the more memorable.

The ship’s captain demonstrated exceptional skill, providing detailed noon-time updates on our course and confidently navigating into ports, even in challenging weather conditions that might have turned others away. Beyond his expert navigation, embarkation and disembarkation were handled with precision, ensuring smooth and efficient transitions for every excursion.
Engaging Entertainment: A Voyage Filled with Performances and Fun
Entertainment was a standout feature of our voyage, offering a dynamic mix of activities and performances that kept us engaged throughout the cruise. The entertainment staff brought energy and excitement with game shows, trivia, and interactive events, creating a lively atmosphere that encouraged passenger participation.
Each evening, the Princess Theater showcased a diverse lineup of performances, featuring both talented guest entertainers and the ship’s own production crew. Bravo! was a true highlight, delivering a West End-caliber performance, while Born to Be Wild impressed with its high-energy production. With such a well-rounded entertainment program, there was always something to enjoy, making each evening onboard a moment to look forward to.
Theater Performances:

The ship’s lounges provided even more entertainment, featuring a variety of talented performers. Guests enjoyed the elegant sounds of violinists, mesmerizing acrobatic performances in the atrium, and the high-energy performances of the Supersonic’s. Their incredible musicianship kept the crowd engaged, but it was their Portuguese-language set that truly stole the show.
A Taste of the Voyage: Dining Highlights
Dining aboard the Sapphire Princess offered a blend of classic favorites and specialty experiences. The ship’s four main dining rooms all featured the same menu, differing only in seating arrangements—assigned, reservations, or walk-in availability. The International Dining Room was the only exception, occasionally offering an additional dish. While the lunch menu remained unchanged throughout the voyage, dinner selections rotated daily, providing a variety of options over the course of the cruise.
For those seeking a change of pace, the ship’s specialty dining venues offered a more elevated culinary experience for an additional charge. Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria and Churrascaria Grill featured carefully crafted dishes in a more personalized dining experience, providing a delightful alternative to the main dining venues. A true standout for us was Alfredo’s Pizzeria, where we enjoyed exceptional, freshly made pizza—a perfect fit for our preference for simple, well-prepared food. We were especially pleased that our Princess Plus package included two complimentary visits, allowing us to savor this popular option at no extra cost.
Port Excursions: Unexpected Twists and Unforgettable Moments
Every port on this cruise was stunning, offering unforgettable tours, but Port Stanley turned out to be the most eventful stop of our journey. Our original excursion to Volunteer Point was canceled the night before due to wet conditions, but the cruise line quickly rebooked us on an afternoon Bluff Cove Tour as an alternative.
With time to spare, we took an impromptu walking tour of Port Stanley, soaking in its charm and history before our scheduled departure. However, upon arrival for the tour, we discovered it had also been canceled due to a two-hour delay in the ship’s arrival, caused by a fishing vessel being towed across the port. While earlier tours had gone ahead as planned, later departures—including ours—were called off.
Determined to make the most of our time, we worked with the shore excursion team and secured spots on the last available tour to Joe’s Gentoo Penguins, where we had the incredible opportunity to see penguins up close. Though the tour was just two and a half hours, it turned out to be the highlight of the entire cruise. Standing face-to-face with penguins on the beach was truly unforgettable, making our time in the Falklands absolutely magical.
Scenic Cruising: Nature’s Spectacle at Sea
Beyond our scheduled ports, the scenic cruising days through the Beagle Channel and the Strait of Magellan felt like bonus excursions, offering some of the most breathtaking views of the voyage. Sailing along Glacier Alley, we had the incredible opportunity to see towering glaciers up close, including one, Espana Glacier, with a waterfall cascading from its icy face —a mesmerizing sight unlike anything I had ever witnessed.
A Closer Look at Amalia Glacier: Nature’s Frozen Masterpiece
As we approached Amalia Glacier, passengers gathered on deck while a naturalist shared fascinating insights into its geological and environmental significance. The ship adjusted its position for optimal viewing, offering a clear sight of the massive ice front and the striking contrast between its brilliant blue ice and darker volcanic ash deposits.
Adding to the experience, Commerson’s dolphins, with their distinctive black-and-white markings, swam near the glacier, creating an unforgettable scene. The naturalist explained how volcanic activity from the nearby Reclus Volcano has influenced the glacier’s composition, contributing to its unique coloration. Discussions also touched on climate change and the glacier’s gradual retreat, emphasizing its role in the regional ecosystem and climate history.
To ensure everyone had the best possible view, the captain spent considerable time at the glacier, slowly rotating the ship, allowing passengers to take in the magnificent scenery from every angle. This thoughtful maneuvering made the experience even more immersive, ensuring that no matter where you stood, you had a chance to fully appreciate the sheer beauty and scale of Amalia Glacier.
Unforgettable Experiences: From Tango to Penguins
Our adventure began in Buenos Aires with a lively Tango show and lunch, where we enjoyed a delicious meal and drinks while watching performers showcase several styles of tango—all from just feet away from the stage. It was an exciting introduction to the culture and energy of Argentina.
However, the highlight of the entire journey was undoubtedly our Joe’s Gentoo Penguin excursion in the Falklands. The experience began with an insightful van ride, where our guide shared stories about life in the Falklands. From there, we boarded a 4×4 for an off-road adventure, taking us to the nesting area and beach, where we had the incredible opportunity to see gentoo penguins up close. The warm hospitality of our hosts made the experience even more memorable.
On the return journey, our driver shared a firsthand account of the Falklands occupation, offering a personal and compelling perspective on the island’s history. This combination of wildlife, adventure, and history made Joe’s Gentoo Penguin Tour a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the most unforgettable highlight of our cruise.
A Memorable Farewell: Disembarkation and Reflections on an Unforgettable Journey
After two extraordinary weeks, our journey came full circle as we arrived in San Antonio, Chile, for disembarkation. The process was smooth and efficient, calling our departure group 20 minutes ahead of schedule. With ease, we collected our luggage and boarded our pre-arranged coach to the airport, enjoying a seamless transfer to begin our journey home.
What I once considered a once-in-a-lifetime trip has now become a destination I long to revisit. The beauty, adventure, and unique charm of South America left an unforgettable impression, making this voyage one of the most enriching travel experiences of my life.
