The Beginning of an Enchanting Journey: Carnival Radiance Embarkation
In October 2024, we left behind the familiar landscapes of Ohio for the sun-soaked shores of Long Beach, California. The day greeted us with sunshine and warm temperatures, setting an inviting backdrop for our adventure. Our stay at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach offered a seamless blend of comfort and proximity to the picturesque Shoreline Village waterfront, a vibrant area that perfectly introduced the laid-back charm of Southern California.
After a long morning flight delay, we arrived at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and secured transportation with Prime Time Shuttle service, which carried us effortlessly to our hotel. To unload our luggage and settle in, we opted for an early check-in at noon, which came with an additional $50 fee. The highlight of our afternoon was a planned visit to the East Village Arts District, where we embarked on a docent-led Architectural Walking Tour that showcased an intriguing blend of historic and modern architecture. We concluded the evening with a simple yet delightful meal at Modica’s Restaurant & Deli in the East Village. A leisurely walk along the waterfront followed, offering serene views of the marina, the RMS Queen Mary, and city lights shimmering on the water—a peaceful prelude to the next day’s embarkation.
Embarking on the Carnival Radiance: The Start of Our Sea Voyage
Transitioning from land to sea was seamless. A quick Uber ride took us from the Hyatt Regency Long Beach to the Carnival Cruise port at 231 Windsor Place, where we arrived at 11:30 a.m. Embarkation was surprisingly smooth despite our lack of elite status with Carnival, as this was only our third cruise with the line and our first since 2012. The process was efficient, allowing us to board and step into the next chapter of our adventure aboard the Carnival Radiance.
Our balcony stateroom, #8253, felt cozy and classic, offering comfortable accommodations. The Radiance, originally built in 2000 and previously known as Carnival Victory, had undergone significant refurbishments, including a $200 million transformation in 2021 at Cádiz, Spain. This extensive refit introduced modern updates and renamed the ship as the Carnival Radiance.
Despite these improvements, certain aspects of the room felt nostalgic. The stateroom boasted a two-seat sofa bed, a feature we greatly appreciated over a simple chair, and an in-room refrigerator nestled within one of the closets. However, the room lacked power or USB outlets near the bed, and the bathroom featured an older-style shower curtain and low threshold that often led to water collecting on the floor.
The balcony itself was compact yet inviting, outfitted with two chairs and a small table. It quickly became one of our favorite places to relax, perfect for savoring a chai latte in the morning or playing cribbage while soaking in the sea views and refreshing breeze. We found ourselves using the deck more than on any previous cruise, enjoying the tranquil moments and stunning scenery as the ship set sail on its journey.

A Vibrant Journey at Sea: Our Carnival Experience
Our recent cruise aboard the Carnival Radiance offered a tapestry of diverse experiences, from awe-inspiring entertainment to enriching lectures, and spontaneous moments that brought life at sea to an exciting crescendo. As we made our way across the Pacific, we found ourselves reflecting on the history of the Hawaiian Islands, particularly how they came to be part of the United States. This thought-provoking journey sparked curiosity and enriched our understanding of Hawaii before we even set foot on its shores.
A Historical Encounter: Uncovering Hawaii’s Past
At our Honolulu stop, we embarked on a day of self-guided exploration where history and culture seamlessly blended. The day led us to the grandeur of ʻIolani Palace, a symbol of Hawaii’s storied past. It was here that we learned the poignant details of Queen Liliʻuokalani’s imprisonment after the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893—a pivotal event that marked the annexation of Hawaii as a U.S. territory and eventually its statehood in 1959. This newfound knowledge cast the islands in a new light, turning our visit into an enlightening experience that deepened our understanding of Hawaii’s complex journey.
Comedy Nights: A Parade of Laughter
Carnival’s passion for comedy was on full display throughout our voyage, as each evening brought a fresh lineup of comedians who filled the ship’s lounges with joy. Chris Strait drew us in with his down-to-earth humor, while Aurelio Bocanegra’s flair kept audiences energized. Brad Trackman delivered sharp, quick-witted comedy, and Chele T had us all nodding in agreement with her relatable quips. John DiCrosta’s interactive approach made each show feel personal, while Larry Omaha layered his acts with cultural insights and satire. Joey Medina’s stand-up had punch, and Jill Kimmel offered a fresh and delightful take that rounded out the lineup. The crowd favorite, Dougie Doug Williams, stole the show with his vibrant and engaging presence.
Musical Evenings with Music & Magic
The music scene onboard was equally vibrant. Music & Magic, a duo whose roots trace back to their days in a larger band in Dubai, have spent 16 years perfecting their performances on Carnival ships. They were nothing short of remarkable, offering a repertoire that included pop, rock, jazz, and modern hits. Whether we were swaying in the intimate setting of the Atrium or dancing in the lively Red Frog Pub, their performances added a musical sparkle that transformed each night into an auditory delight.
An Artful Engagement at Sea
We were kept engaged with art auctions and exhibits hosted by Park West Galleries, which added a touch of sophistication to our days at sea. The blend of art appreciation and onboard activities made the voyage a well-rounded experience, appealing to both our artistic sensibilities and our curiosity.
A Premium Experience with Carnival’s Casino Plan
This particular sailing carried a unique vibe, thanks in part to the many guests participating in the Carnival Casino Loyalty Program. This initiative, known for rewarding avid casino players with perks like complimentary or discounted cruises, VIP events, and tournaments, added an extra layer of excitement onboard. The casino buzzed with energy as guests tried their luck at high-stakes games, making it a hub for camaraderie and anticipation.
Showstopping Main Stage Performances
The main stage was a feast for the senses, featuring a stellar lineup of talent. Brent Kessler combined magic and comedy to create a show that left us amazed. Rock Revolution, a Carnival tribute to Woodstock, pulsed with the spirit of the ‘60s, and Ron Mitchel brought the soulful notes of Motown to life. Doug MacCraw’s hypnotism act was both playful and mind-bending, while Mike Stanley fused comedy with sleight-of-hand. Michael Stephen Menes impressed with physical comedy, and the powerful voice of Karl Loxley captivated us. The grand magic of Drew Thomas, country music serenades by Lana Scott of The Voice, and whimsical ventriloquism by Phil Hughes completed the showcase, leaving audiences only wanting for more.
Lectures That Broadened Our Horizons
Adding an educational touch, Dr. Stephen R. Hale delivered lectures that deepened our appreciation for the Hawaiian Islands. His insights on volcanoes, Hawaiian reef fishes, and the endemic birds of the region enriched our understanding and added context to our port visits.
Throwback Day: A Nostalgic Celebration
October 23rd was a memorable day marked by Carnival’s nostalgic tribute to its roots. Carnival delighted us with a charming handout depicting its original Carnival Mardi Gras ship, and our stateroom attendant, Ricky, shared fond memories of his first assignment with the company. The day was a playful blend of activities: Walk-a-Mile, Horse Racing, Bingo, the whimsical Knobby Knees competition, and the spirited Ping-Pong Bathing Suit Challenge. Two Captains’ Cocktail parties added a touch of elegance to the festivities, making the day one of the most entertaining of the voyage.
Ports of Adventure and Natural Wonders
Our first port adventure was at the tranquil Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. We took time to admire native plants and photograph birds to share with Dr. Hale. It was a relaxing prelude to the cultural immersion of the Drums of the Pacific Luau, where dance and traditional music brought Hawaii’s rich heritage to life.
However, the highlight of our journey was the VIP Volcanoes National Park and Waterfall Tour in Hilo. Despite having seen many volcanoes before, the sheer magnitude and mesmerizing presence of this one took our breath away. It was a moment of awe, realization, and deep connection to nature’s power—a sight that anchored itself in our memories as a pinnacle of the trip.
