Our day trip outing on the Holland Dream Tour began on a cool, drizzly morning. Along with 28 fellow travelers, we set off from just outside Amsterdam’s Centraal Station. Despite some initial disorganization, our tour guide quickly gathered everyone and assigned group numbers for efficient tracking. With these logistics settled, we embarked on our journey, soaking in the picturesque surroundings enroute to our first destination: Zaanse Schans.
Zaanse Schans: A Taste of Dutch Culture

Clog-Making Demonstration
15-minute clog-making demonstration | 1-hour free time
Kooijman Souvenirs & Clogs Wooden Shoe Workshop, Kraaienest 4, Zaandam, Noord-Holland 1509 AZ
Our first stop was the charming Zaanse Schans, where a local artisan treated us to a captivating clog-making demonstration.

We marveled at the history and practical uses of the clog and observed both traditional and modern crafting techniques. To conclude the presentation, the artisan revealed the true dampness of the wood used in clog-making by blowing into the shoe, releasing a significant amount of condensation.

Cheese Maker’s Workshop
15-minute cheese making demonstration
Catharina Hoeve Cheese Farm, Zeilenmakerspad 5, 1509 BZ Zaandam
As we ventured from the clog demonstration towards the cheese maker’s workshop, the skies unleashed a downpour accompanied by gusty winds. Undeterred and equipped with umbrellas, we eagerly awaited entry to the cheese demonstration in the pouring rain. Although this presentation was more of an informative discussion than the hands-on experience I remembered from the 1990s, we still gleaned valuable knowledge and were ultimately ushered into the cheese store, where we were encouraged to request samples and savor the various flavors on offer.

The local artisans of Zaanse Schans play a significant role in preserving the region’s cultural heritage. From the clog-maker, skillfully crafting traditional Dutch wooden shoes, to the cheese-maker, carefully curating each flavor and texture, their passion for their craft is evident in every product.
De Kat Paint Mill Experience
20-minute windmill inside visit
De Kat Paint Mill, Kalverringdijk 29, Zaandam, North Holland 1509 BZ
The inclement weather persisted during our free time, but we were determined to make the most of our Zaanse Schans visit. We navigated the winds and rain to explore De Kat paint mill. The entrance fee of €5.50 proved to be a worthy investment.
Stepping into De Kat Paint Mill is like embarking on a journey back to the zenith of Dutch industrial heritage. It is the only remaining working windmill in the world which makes paint, showcasing the ingenuity of the Dutch in harnessing the power of wind.
Dating back to the 18th century, De Kat has been painstakingly restored and continues to grind raw materials into pigments for paints. The rich history of the mill is palpable, from the original wooden gears that still grind pigments, to the wind-catching sails that continue to harness the power of nature.

The traditional methods of pigment grinding used here have been sustained throughout the centuries, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the historic Dutch paint industry.
Inside, the small museum on the ground floor hosts a variety of exhibits that provide fascinating insight into the history of paint-making and the significant role it played in the Dutch Golden Age of painting. Famous painters of the time, like Rembrandt and Vermeer, would have used paints made in mills like De Kat.
The steep climb up the ladder to the upper level of the windmill rewards visitors with an up-close view of the mill’s complex machinery—a testament to Dutch engineering prowess.

The wooden gears, giant grindstones, and rotating millstone floor provide a sense of the mill’s dynamic nature. Stepping outside to the gallery encircling the mill, you’re treated to a panoramic view of the Zaan river and the surrounding region of Zaanse Schans, a breathtaking sight that is as much a part of the experience as the mill itself.

The inclement weather added an element of risk to our adventure, but we faced it with determination, a reflection of the resilience and resolve that have characterized the Dutch people throughout history. The sight of the windmill turning, even under the force of a strong rainstorm, is a potent symbol of this enduring spirit.
The beauty of Zaanse Schans lies not only in its picturesque landscapes but also in its rich historical and cultural tapestry. It’s not just a scenic getaway, it’s like stepping back in time into a well-preserved 17th and 18th-century Dutch village. The architecture, the windmills, the artisanal shops, and the local workshops, everything tells a story of a time that once was.

Volendam, The Charming Seaside Hamlet

Exploring the Waterfront and Kerkepad
Next on our itinerary was Volendam, a captivating seaside hamlet nestled in the heart of Holland. Once a prosperous fishing hub, Volendam has preserved its rich history, maintaining its traditional allure. We meandered through its scenic waterfront village lined with charming stores and cafe’s.

Volendam’s compelling charm is deeply rooted in its vibrant history. Founded in the 14th century, this former fishing village once thrived on herring and shrimp fisheries. Even today, it fondly embraces its fishing roots, evident in the picturesque marina bustling with classic fishing boats. This sight instantly transports visitors back in time, offering a glimpse into the village’s old-world charm.

Additionally, this idyllic village has been a source of inspiration for numerous artists, thanks to its rustic landscapes, historical buildings, and the ever-changing hues of the IJsselmeer lake against which it lies. A walk along the waterfront promenade offered breathtaking views of the waterside scenery, harmonizing with the quaint fishing boats bobbing gently in the water.
As we headed back toward bus parking, a uniquely appealing side street caught our eye and beckoned us to venture down its path. This spontaneous diversion led us to the famed Kerkepad, an area that showcases a captivating array of quaint, traditional Dutch homes.

In this delightful region of Kerkepad, we found ourselves marveling at the distinctive Dutch architectural style. With their stepped gable roofs, embellished facades, and shuttered windows, these snug homes exuded a warmth and charm that perfectly encapsulated the essence of Dutch domestic life. These residences, painted in soft pastels and standing in neat rows, added a distinctly picturesque flavor to our meandering exploration.

A Brush with Local Revelry
As we continued our walk, we passed a pub bursting with jovial locals, their lively singing audible from a block away. They beckoned us to join in the revelry, but our tight schedule didn’t permit us to join the festivities. Our brief encounter with Volendam left us yearning for more and vowing to return someday to fully experience this charming village.

1-hour guided boat tour

The climax of our unforgettable journey came as we arrived at the captivating village of Giethoorn, nestled in the heart of the Netherlands.

Frequently referred to as the “Venice of the North,” Giethoorn boasts an extensive network of canals, which serve as the primary mode of transportation for both locals and visitors. To fully immerse ourselves in the charm of this idyllic destination, we embarked on a one-hour guided boat tour that showcased the essence of Giethoorn’s unique allure.

As we gently floated along the picturesque canals, we were immediately struck by the quaint farmhouses that dotted the landscape. Perched on miniature, man-made islands, these homes seemed to float on the water, evoking a serene and otherworldly atmosphere. Each house was a masterpiece in its own right, featuring distinctive thatched roofs that epitomize the village’s traditional architecture.

While navigating the labyrinthine waterways, our knowledgeable guide shared insights into the local craftsmanship that has been honed over generations. We learned that the region’s abundant marshlands provide the ideal environment for reed cultivation, which is then expertly harvested and crafted into the iconic thatched roofs. As we continued our leisurely cruise, we were fortunate enough to witness a boat filled to the brim with freshly cut reeds, destined for a nearby roof installation.

The serene beauty of Giethoorn’s marshlands was punctuated by vibrant patches of green, where the reeds grew in abundance. These lush wetlands, teeming with diverse flora and fauna, provided a tranquil backdrop for our tour. The gentle lapping of the water against the boat’s hull and the melodic calls of various bird species added to the enchanting ambiance of our journey.

As we glided past immaculate gardens and picturesque footbridges, we marveled at the seamless harmony between human habitation and the surrounding natural environment. The absence of cars and the reliance on boats and bicycles for transportation only served to heighten the sense of timelessness that pervades Giethoorn.

Our one-hour boat tour in the magical village of Giethoorn offered us an unparalleled glimpse into the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of this cherished Dutch gem.

As we disembarked from our vessel and stepped back onto solid ground, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for having experienced a slice of paradise in the heart of the Netherlands.
