⌖ Backstage access, pre-show meal, and an epic open-air drama at Sugarloaf Mountain
We set out early, bound for Serpent Mound, where an archaeology tour deepened our understanding of Shawnee history—and primed us for the evening’s performance of Tecumseh! For the full site experience, see our companion piece: Archaeology Tour of Serpent Mound.
① Prologue Stop — Serpent Mound
⚲ 3850 State Route 73, Peebles, OH 45660
⧗ 1.5 hours
Upon arrival, we were struck by the magnificence of Serpent Mound, an effigy mound created by prehistoric Native American cultures. According to Shawnee legend, as recounted by the prophet Tenskwatawa, the Shawnee called upon their Grandfather Serpent to rescue warriors lost beneath the sea on the back of an immense turtle. The serpent’s body parts, used as powerful medicine, symbolize the deep spiritual and cultural beliefs of the Shawnee people.
Enriching Our Understanding
Learning about these legends provided us with a deeper understanding of the Shawnee people, their beliefs, and their connection to the land. This enriched our appreciation for Tecumseh, the legendary Shawnee leader, whose story we would later witness. Serpent Mound is a fitting place to begin this journey as it embodies the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Shawnee people, setting the stage for the powerful recounting of Tecumseh’s life. For those interested in a more in-depth look at our Serpent Mound tour, we have detailed our experience in another article.
Tecumseh! Outdoor Theatre and Living History
With the stories gathered at Serpent Mound regarding Tecumseh and the Shawnee people fresh in our minds, we made our way to the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre in Chillicothe, Ohio, which was about an hour’s drive away. The Amphitheatre, nestled amidst the natural beauty of Sugarloaf Mountain, is a fitting venue for the Tecumseh Outdoor Drama, a powerful recounting of the life and struggles of the legendary Shawnee leader. Our arrival at the Amphitheatre was smooth, and our VIP and backstage tickets were promptly issued. We joined a small group of fellow enthusiasts and waited for the backstage tour to commence at 5:30 PM.
② Backstage Tour and Behind-the-Scenes Insights
⚲ Backstage, Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre, 5968 Marietta Road, Chillicothe, OH 45601
⧗ 1 hour
As the clock struck 5:30, we were greeted by RiQuandrion Mangum, a charismatic guide with a wealth of knowledge about the history of the show and the facility. RiQuandrion, who has been with the production for several seasons, shared fascinating insights about the show’s origins and evolution. We began our tour by sitting in the upper stage seats, where RiQuandrion provided an overview of the drama’s historical significance and its impact on the community.
Exploring the Stage and Props
The Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre, constructed in 1973 specifically for the Tecumseh Outdoor Drama, was designed to blend seamlessly with the natural landscape. The Amphitheatre’s unique design enhances the production’s realism, making the audience feel as if they are truly witnessing the events unfold in Tecumseh’s time. Descending from our seats, we stepped onto the natural dirt stage, a crucial element of the production that blends with the surrounding landscape. RiQuandrion explained how the man-made lake behind the stage is ingeniously incorporated into the performance, adding to the show’s authenticity.
Stage Left: Dressing Room and Props
Our next stop was Stage Left, where we marveled at the large rock landscape structure. Originally built with wood, it was later recast in cement and painted to mimic natural rock, providing a durable and realistic backdrop for the drama. Walking through a tunnel in this structure, we emerged at the edge of the lake, where a canoe and the dressing rooms for cast members were situated. Here, we witnessed a demonstration of how fake blood devices and other props are used to create the illusion of injury, adding to the show’s realism.
Stage Right: The Role of Horses and Artillery
Continuing our journey, we strolled along the back path of the lake and learned about the six horses housed and used within the production. Their presence on stage adds a dynamic and thrilling element to the drama. Arriving at Stage Right, Jacquez Morgan, another talented cast member, demonstrated the loading and shooting of the guns used in the show, including a Kentucky Hunter’s Rifle and Shotgun. Jacquez explained the power and sound of each weapon and discussed the use of cannon fire during the performance. We were also treated to a close-up combat demonstration by the cast members, showcasing the choreographed fight scenes that bring the drama to life.
③ Kenton House Food & Ale

⧗ 30 minutes
Pre-Show Bite
After the tour, we made our way to Kenton House Food and Ale for a quick dinner. The bar food/pub fare was exactly what we needed to fuel up before the show. We shared a Pulled Pork Sandwich, a Hot Ham & Swiss, and an order of Pub Fries with Bacon. The cafeteria-style setup under a shelter provided a relaxed atmosphere, with cast members passing by as we ate.
Pre-Show Observations
While waiting just outside the gates of the Amphitheatre for the show to begin, we noticed a nature trail leading down from the entrance. This trail is part of the surrounding park area and offers visitors a chance to explore the natural beauty of Sugarloaf Mountain. It winds through lush woodland, providing a peaceful retreat and an opportunity to see local flora and fauna. The trail is well-maintained and marked, making it accessible for a leisurely walk or a more adventurous hike.
④ The Tecumseh! Performance

The drama unfolded with a captivating blend of action, history, and emotion, telling the story of the legendary Shawnee leader, Tecumseh. The performance was riveting, the costumes vibrant, and the use of the natural surroundings added an unparalleled sense of realism to the production.

Throughout the show, we saw the elements come to life that we learned about during the backstage tour. The cannon fire and combat scenes were particularly striking, showcasing the attention to detail and dedication of the cast and crew.
