⌖ A Journey Through America’s Oldest Operating Theatre and Its Masonic Past
Tour Route: Theatre Lobby → Stage & Backstage → Balcony → Masonic Hall → Return to Lobby
Our tour of the Majestic Theatre in Chillicothe, Ohio, began with a fascinating introduction to the town’s history by our knowledgeable guide, Kevin Coleman of Intrepid Heritage Services. Kevin, a local historian renowned for his deep understanding of Chillicothe’s heritage, set the stage for an enriching exploration of this historic venue.
① Theatre Lobby and Introduction
⚲ 45 E 2nd St, Chillicothe, OH 45601
⧗ Approx. 1.5 hours
The Majestic Theatre, originally built in the Renaissance Revival style as a Masonic Lodge with a theatre beneath it, has been a cultural cornerstone since its construction. Remarkably, it holds the distinction of being America’s oldest continuously operating theater, a testament to its enduring legacy and significance. Our journey commenced in the newly renovated lobby, moving through the theatre’s various sections and culminating in the Masonic Lodge on the third floor. Kevin explained that the entire building initially served as the Masonic Lodge, including the theatre.
The Majestic Theatre was constructed to provide a meeting place for the local Masonic Lodge. By 1904, the Masons had relocated their Lodge, allowing the theatre to evolve independently. One of the pivotal renovations occurred in 1918, coinciding with the establishment of Camp Sherman, a World War I military training camp situated just two blocks away. Camp Sherman, one of the largest military training camps in the United States, housed over 40,000 soldiers at its peak. The Majestic Theatre provided entertainment to these soldiers, adding to its historical significance during this period.
Backstage Details and More
Entering the main theatre, Kevin shared stories of its rich and somewhat eerie past. The Majestic is reputed to be haunted, with numerous ghost stories enhancing its mystique. As we looked towards the stage, Kevin led us behind it, where we explored the dressing rooms and learned about a trap door that once existed to move items between the floors.
On the stage, Kevin explained the function of the side curtains, known as “tormentors” in theatrical terminology. We briefly discussed the sets and how the side alley door is used to move equipment in and out. Venturing into an area ominously referred to as “Blood Alley” outside the stage door, Kevin recounted how this alley served as a holding area for bodies during the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, when the theatre temporarily acted as a morgue. This grim history adds to the theatre’s haunted reputation.
Our backstage tour continued with a view of the stage and the catwalks above, providing insight into the theatre’s behind-the-scenes operations. Kevin then guided us to the original lobby, steeped in history and teeming with ghost stories. One notable tale involves a ghostly figure believed to be a former projectionist, who is said to flicker lights or move objects in the lobby.
Balcony Views
Ascending the stairs to the balcony, we found the projection room but unfortunately the door was locked. However, the balcony offered a unique perspective of the theatre’s interior, showcasing a blend of historical architecture and modern renovations. Kevin pointed out the steepening of the balcony over the years to improve audience views. Paranormal activity has been reported in the center of the balcony, though we did not experience any during our visit. The balcony’s unique supports and intricate banisters reflected the theatre’s age.
② The Masonic Hall
⚲ Third Floor, Majestic Theatre Building, 45 E 2nd St, Chillicothe, OH 45601
⧗ Approx. 20 minutes
Climbing another flight of stairs, we entered the original wood-lain stairwell from the 1853/4 construction. For historical reference, a fire in 1852 destroyed the original 1809 Bank of Chillicothe, leading to the construction of the current building. At the top of the stairs, we passed through large brown wooden double doors, that gained us entrance to the main rooms of the former Masonic Lodge.
The left room was large and overlooked the courtyard. Some minor restoration revealed elegant painted walls. The ballroom, with several large windows and a bathroom, reflected the Lodge’s historical significance. Kevin explained the distinctions between the Blue and Red Lodge factions of Freemasonry. In the back was the main lodge area, inaccessible due to its enclosure over the stage, though we peered through to glimpse its dark interior.
In contrast, the room to the right was much smaller and was the Masonic meeting room. Adorned with wall paintings representing the Knights Templar, this room has undergone basic restoration by the Adena House and Mansion restoration personnel. Currently, the room houses chairs sourced from the Palace Theatre in Columbus, awaiting future use in the Majestic Theatre.
Reflections on the Majestic Experience
Returning to the newly remodeled lobby, we reflected on our 1.5-hour journey through the Majestic Theatre with Kevin. The tour blended historical facts with captivating stories, offering a comprehensive look at this cultural landmark. From the theatre’s origins as a Masonic Lodge to its role during the Spanish flu pandemic and its ghostly tales, the experience was truly enriching. As we departed for the Adena House and Mansion, we felt a deeper connection to Chillicothe’s vibrant history.
