⌖ Pine-cloaked islets, temple artistry, and hilltop vistas on Japan’s storied bay

Tour Route: Sendai Port → Matsushima Sightseeing Pier → Zuiganji Temple → Entsuin Temple → Godaido Temple → Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park → Return to Sendai

Departing from the bustling port of Sendai, our journey unfolded towards the serene heart of Matsushima Bay recognized as one of the three views of Japan. The drive, a little over an hour and a half from Sendai, showcased a landscape steeped in historical and natural wonders, resonating with profound cultural significance.

⧗ 1 hr 30 min coach transfer

Upon our arrival in Matsushima just before noon, the tour operator found a convenient parking lot across from the Century Inn. From here, a brief five-minute walk brought us to the stunning shores of Matsushima Bay, where the Third Nioh Me, our designated sightseeing vessel, was ready to guide us through the breathtaking beauty of the bay.

① Matsushima Sightseeing Pier — Bay Cruise

⧗ 1-hour boat tour

Matsushima Bay, celebrated as a national treasure, captivates visitors with its more than 260 pine-covered islands and striking rock formations. Known for its scenic beauty and geological diversity, the bay enchants with a one-hour cruise that offers breathtaking panoramic views from multiple decks. This journey not only showcased the unique characteristics of each island but also highlighted the bay’s remarkable resilience, particularly evident during the 2012 Tsunami. Despite the devastating impact of the disaster, the natural barriers formed by the islands largely protected the area, preserving its untouched beauty and solidifying its reputation as a symbol of enduring strength.

Iconic Islands of Matsushima

During the enchanting one-hour cruise through Matsushima Bay, we were treated to a vivid tableau of natural artistry and cultural heritage. The bay, dotted with a multitude of islands, featured some particularly iconic formations that easily capture the imagination:

  • Building a Bridge Island: Known for its unique arch-like shape, this island symbolically connects the natural elements of Matsushima, enhancing its mythical allure.
  • Neoge or Sitting Man Island: This island is famously associated with the bay and is named for its resemblance to a seated figure, embodying the serene and contemplative nature of the area.
  • Komachi-jima: Celebrated for its dramatic outline, Komachi-jima is a photographer’s dream, frequently featured in depictions of the bay’s stark beauty.
  • Bishamon-jima: This island holds a special place in the spiritual life of the region, reputed to bring protection and fortune to those who visit.

The cruise provided more than just visual delights; it served as an educational journey, narrated with insights into the historical and cultural significance of these islands. The guide’s commentary shed light on the rich history of Matsushima Bay, revealing how its breathtaking scenery has inspired classic haiku poetry and captivated admirers for centuries.

The proximity of Godaido Temple, a picturesque site we would visit later, enhanced the spiritual ambiance as the cruise concluded.

② Zuiganji Temple — Date Masamune’s Restored Masterwork

⧗ 20-minute inside visit

After disembarking, a 10-minute walk took us to the impressive Zuiganji Temple, but not before passing by the Reigando Caves—historic meditation spots once used by Buddhist monks. These caves, carved into the rock, served as a secluded retreat for spiritual practice and deep meditation.

As we passed through the Onari gate, we approached the entrance to Zuiganji Temple, a site of both architectural and historical significance, magnificently restored by the feudal lord Date Masamune in the early 1600s. The temple is particularly famous for its nightingale floors. These cleverly engineered corridors chirp underfoot, designed to alert the presence of intruders, combining practical security with aesthetic elegance in a manner befitting this storied sanctuary.

Inside Zuiganji Temple, our tour transformed into a rich visual and spiritual experience. We ventured through several exquisitely adorned rooms, including the Central Room, Peacock Room, and the distinctively themed Pine Tree and Hawk’s Rooms. Each chamber was meticulously decorated with historic artifacts and elaborate wall designs, reflecting the deep cultural heritage of the era. Although photography was not permitted, the vivid and intricate details of these rooms left a profound and lasting impression on us.

③ Entsuin Temple — Gardens of Reflection

⚲ Chonai-67, Matsushima, Matsushima-machi, Miyagi 981-0213, Japan
⧗ 30-minute visit

A short walk from Zuiganji led to Entsuin Temple, built to commemorate Date Mitsumune, the grandson of Date Masamune, who died at a young age. Entsuin is not only a site of historical importance but also a stunning example of Momoyama architecture blended with Zen aesthetics. The temple is surrounded by exquisite gardens designed for meditation, including rock, moss, and maple gardens, each reflecting the changing seasons. We spent about 30 minutes here, experiencing the peaceful ambiance and spiritual serenity that characterize Japanese temple gardens.

④ Godaido Temple — Five Wisdom Buddhas

⚲ Chonai, Matsushima, Miyagi-gun, Miyagi 981-0213, Japan
⧗ 20-minute outside visit

A brief 15-minute walk from Entsuin led us to the iconic Godaido Temple, nestled in the symbolic heart of Matsushima. Established in 807 and masterfully reconstructed by Date Masamune in 1604, Godaido stands as the oldest Momoyama-style building in northeastern Japan. The temple serves as a sanctuary for the five Buddhas of wisdom. Above, the Japanese zodiac signs intricately displayed offer a unique cultural exploration, connecting visitors to the celestial aspects of Japanese culture. During our 20-minute visit, each of us engaged in the personal journey of identifying our zodiac sign, deepening our connection to the rich tapestry of traditions housed within Godaido.

⑤ Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park — Hilltop Outlook

⚲ Inuta, Matsushima, Matsushima-machi, Miyagi 981-0213, Japan
⧗ 30-minute visit

Our tour reached its serene conclusion at Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park, named after the renowned poet Saigyo who once reflected on the ephemeral beauty of cherry blossoms here. This locale hosts the charming Shiogama Shrine restaurant, known for its elevated porch that offers a panoramic view over the blossoms. Our leisurely walk along the restaurant’s porch and the nearby hill served as a perfect conclusion to our day, enveloping us in the natural beauty and rich historical tapestry of the region.

⟲ Return to Sendai
