Tastes & Panoramas of Dalmatia

⌖ Historic Cathedral Towns and Adriatic Waterfront Walks

Tour Route: Zadar → Šibenik → Skradin Overlook → Zadar Old Town → Return

A short walk from the cruise terminal brought us to the waiting coaches along the quay in Zadar. Once everyone was aboard, the bus pulled away from the harbor and headed inland toward the town of Šibenik. The drive took about an hour and a half across low-lying plains before reaching the outskirts of the historic center.

The coach stopped near the edge of the old town, where the tour continued on foot. We entered the narrow stone streets of Šibenik, following passageways paved with worn limestone blocks that had been smoothed by centuries of foot traffic. The streets gradually climbed between closely spaced buildings as we moved deeper into the historic center.

① Šibenik Walking Tour & Cathedral of St. Jacob

⚲ Šibenik, Croatia
⧗ Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes

Once in Šibenik we began a walking tour through the town that eventually led to the Cathedral of St. Jacob. The cathedral was undergoing heavy restoration during our visit, with scaffolding surrounding the upper dome and portions of the exterior.

52216-058
Šibenik — Cathedral of St. James
The Cathedral of St. James is one of Dalmatia’s most important Renaissance monuments, constructed entirely from limestone blocks during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Compared with several of the Italian ports we had visited earlier in the cruise, Šibenik felt more subdued. Even so, it was an enjoyable stop and the town had a relaxed atmosphere with friendly locals. We both thought that if the itinerary had been reversed — visiting here before the Italian ports — the experience might have felt more impressive.

52216-065
Šibenik — Cathedral Square Tour
Cruise excursion groups gather in the cathedral square as local guides explain the history and distinctive stone construction of Šibenik’s UNESCO-listed cathedral.

Inside the cathedral complex we gathered in the baptistery, which our guide explained was considered one of the most beautiful in Croatia. Sunday mass was underway at the time, so the group waited there for about fifteen minutes before we were allowed to enter further inside.

Šibenik — Cathedral of St. James Baptistery Ceiling
The richly sculpted stone ceiling of the cathedral’s baptistery features Renaissance relief carvings of angels and biblical figures.

After taking a few photographs our guide released us for roughly half an hour to explore the area around the cathedral square independently. During this free time we wandered a few streets away and came across the Church of St. Barbara, one of the oldest surviving churches in Šibenik.

The small stone Church of St. Barbara is one of the oldest surviving churches in Šibenik’s historic center.

When the free time ended the group regrouped in the square outside the cathedral before walking back through the streets to the waiting bus.

② Skradin Scenic Overlook & Rest Stop

⚲ Skradin Viewpoint, Croatia
⧗ Approximately 20 minutes

The bus returned toward Zadar by highway rather than along the coastal road. Earlier in the day we had sat on the left side of the bus hoping to photograph the coastline on the return trip, but the route change meant those views never appeared.

After passing through a tollgate the coach pulled into a busy highway rest stop where several other tour buses had already stopped. Inside the café trays of croissants were available — plain, chocolate, or nut-filled — along with water, tea, coffee, and apple juice. Additional items such as beer or other food could be purchased separately.

One practical detail became obvious here: many merchants were not accepting euros at the time, so purchases required Croatian kuna.

52216-098
Skradin — Krka River Overlook
From the hillside viewpoint the Krka River winds through forested hills toward the harbor town of Skradin.

Behind the café terrace a viewing area overlooked the river channel leading toward the town of Skradin. From the edge of the terrace the marina basin and clustered red-roofed buildings of the town were visible below, surrounded by wooded hills and calm water filled with sailboats. The overlook quickly became the most memorable viewpoint of the day before the group returned to the coach and continued the drive back toward Zadar.

Sailboats fill the marina basin at Skradin, a small Dalmatian harbor town at the gateway to Krka National Park.

③ Zadar Waterfront & Walled City Walk

⚲ Zadar Old Town, Croatia
⧗ Approximately 45 minutes

Back on the bus we continued toward Zadar where the tour concluded with a short walking segment through the historic center. After arriving in the city we began a walk along the waterfront where our guide pointed out the solar installation representing the sun and its surrounding planets.

52216-116
Zadar — Greeting to the Sun
Visitors walk across the solar-panel installation known as Greeting to the Sun along Zadar’s waterfront promenade.

Nearby stands the Sea Organ, an installation that normally produces tones as waves move air through pipes beneath the promenade. Unfortunately it was not operating during our visit because the pipes were being cleaned.

52216-138
Zadar — St. Donatus Church
The circular Church of St. Donatus dominates the Roman Forum in Zadar’s old town and dates to the early 9th century.

From the waterfront the walk continued into the walled city of Zadar. Along the route we saw portions of the historic structures that had survived both World War II bombings and the Croatian War of Independence. Many of the surrounding buildings were reconstructions or restorations still underway. According to our guide, the extent of rebuilding has complicated efforts to list the site as a UNESCO World Heritage location.

The walk eventually brought us to the remains of Zadar’s ancient Roman Forum, once the civic center of the Roman colony that occupied this part of the Adriatic coast nearly two thousand years ago. Portions of the original foundations and architectural fragments still mark the layout of the historic square.

52216-140
Zadar — Pillar of Shame
This stone column once served as a public punishment post where offenders were chained and displayed in the Roman Forum.

Nearby stood a tall stone column known locally as the Pillar of Shame. Our guide explained that in earlier centuries offenders were sometimes chained to the column and left in public view as a form of punishment and humiliation.

Inside the walled city the streets opened into a lively commercial area with a number of upscale shops and services. Street vendors and souvenir stalls were scattered throughout the district, and the atmosphere was active with visitors moving through the narrow streets.

The walk through the old town brought the excursion to a close before we made our way back toward the port area.
