It was our last day of the Outlander Tour when we departed the Eden 1 Cottage for the final time. Now on the road we headed to Craigmillar Castle with our luggage loaded in the back.
Craigmillar Castle (Ardsmuir Prison)
45-minute drive || 1-hour visit
Craigmillar Castle Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH16 4SY, UK
In the movie Outlaw King, this castle was the filming location for the primary home of Robert the Bruce. In real life Craigmillar Castle was home to Mary Queen of Scots in 1566, and her prison in 1567.

For Outlander, the castle was used as Ardsmuir Prison. We started in the courtyard where the captured Jacobite’s were taken after the battle of Culloden. This is also where we first met the adult Lord John Grey. Next, we visited the Toy Room, just off the courtyard, where Jamie learned about the gold on Silkie Island (Series EP: 303).

Afterwards, we perused the grounds, taking in the castle walk, kitchen, and learning a bit of Castle history. Both spacious and beautiful, it’s well worth a visit.

Glencorse Old Kirk (Wedding Chapel)
20-minute drive || 1-hour visit
Glencorse House, Milton Bridge, Penicuik EH26 0NZ, UK
Arriving at the Glencorse Old Kirk and we’re immediately met by Sarah, whose family owns the house, grounds and gardens. Sarah took us up the steep drive to the Old Chapel and provided a montage of details on the filming of the Outlander wedding scene (Series EP: 107).

This restored chapel, built in the mid-1600’s has a well-maintained graveyard surrounding the Chapel with headstones dating to at least 1644.

You can learn more about the venue, including the Outlander filming, or how to host your own wedding by visiting the Glencorse House facebook page.
Original Rosslyn Inn
5-minute drive || 1-hour, 30-minute High Tea
Rosslyn Inn, 4 Main Street, Old Town, Edinburgh EH25 9LE, UK
The Original Rosslyn Inn was our destination for High Tea. Our celebration comprised the traditional finger sandwiches, scones, coffee and of course, a large variety tea.

With this being our last day with the tour, the group partook in great conversation about the last few days with new friends.
Rosslyn Chapel
2-minute drive || 45-minute visit
Chapel Loan, Roslin, Scotland EH25 9PU, UK
After our High Tea, we drove up the street to visit Rosslyn Chapel, constructed in 1450. Here we learned about the Chapels 150-year abandonment, and ultimate restoration.

The chapel has no correlation to the filming of Outlander; however, it was used extensively in the production of the DaVinci Code.
We sat in on a 20-minute Chapel Guide talk that is given at the top of each hour except at 1pm. Unfortunately, interior picture taking was not allowed, but be assured an inside visit is well worth your time. After the talk, we explored the church a bit and then visited the Sacristy.
Hotel Drop-Off
2-hour drive || Linlithgow via Edinburgh
1 Court Square, High Street, Linlithgow, EH49 7EQ, UK
Now we said goodbyes to our gracious hosts, Emma and Anne, and began the trip back to Edinburgh for Hotel drop-offs signifying that our Outlander Scotland 5 Day Immersion tour had indeed come to an end.

We were the last drop-off on the bus, journeying back to the Linlithgow Court Residence where we thanked the Mary’s Meanders staff and our driver Paul for the last time.
Sanam Tandoori
15-minute drive
5 Callendar Road, Falkirk FK1 1XS
After we got settled in a bit, our Scottish friends stopped by and took us out to dinner at Sanam Tandoori in Falkirk.

We had the most wonderful meal and conversation, reliving our week and the places we had visited.
