⧗ 45-minute scenic drive
Our journey began with a scenic drive through Ponta Delgada, a city that serves as the largest municipality and executive capital of the Azores. As we left the ship, the roads were lined with Japanese Cedars, Hydrangeas, and Ginger Lilies, creating a captivating natural landscape. We could already sense the unique blend of volcanic landscapes and lush agricultural areas that define this region.
Volcanic Origins and Unique Biodiversity
Enriching our experience, our knowledgeable guide narrated the history and formation of the Azores. We marveled at the islands’ volcanic origins and the astonishing biodiversity that enveloped us from every angle.

⧗ 45-minute independent visit
Passing wrought-iron gates, we entered a living museum of flora—camellias, ferns, and century-old trees lining meandering canals. At its center glowed the amber waters of the park’s iconic thermal pool, its warmth fed by subterranean springs.
Leisurely Stroll Among Centuries-Old Trees
Opting for independence, we embarked on a leisurely stroll through the garden. Centuries-old trees, meandering canals, enchanting grottoes, and a stunning array of flora, including camellias, ferns, and cycas, unveiled themselves at every turn.
Ideal Times for Camellia Lovers
Despite our brief visit, Terra Nostra Garden left an indelible mark. For camellia enthusiasts, specific visitation seasons were outlined: October to November for Camellia sasanqua, February to March for Camellia reticulata & Hybrids, and February to April for Camellia japonica.

Continuing our journey, we ventured to the thermal hot spring of Furnas Village, where the earth seemed to exhale sulfuric steam, creating an ethereal atmosphere. During our 15-minute exploration, we roamed freely, occasionally receiving insights from our guide. The thermal springs, with their bubbling and hissing, enveloped us in a mystical mist. The soothing warmth of the water contrasted beautifully with the crisp, cool air, creating a surreal sensation on our skin. Here, Azorean culture and volcanic nature harmoniously coexisted, with locals using natural steam to prepare their traditional stew, Cozido das Caldeiras, along the shores at Furnas Lake.

At an altitude of 570 meters (1,870 feet), we were greeted by an awe-inspiring panorama of the Furnas Valley, revealing the volcanic crater, Furnas Lagoon with its fumaroles and hot springs, and the surrounding mountainous area. This fleeting yet deeply moving moment overflowed with beauty and awe.
