Exclusive Penguin Rookery at Punta Tombo Reserve

From Puerto Madryn, this shore excursion traveled deep into Patagonia to visit Punta Tombo, the world’s largest Magellanic penguin colony. Elevated boardwalks offered unforgettable views of nesting penguins and their chicks. The day concluded in Gaiman with traditional Welsh tea at Ty Gwyn Teahouse, where settlers preserved their language and culture in the Chubut River Valley.

⌖ Magellanic Penguins and Welsh Traditions in Patagonia

Tour Route: Puerto Madryn → AGUSFED S.A. Rest Stop → Punta Tombo Penguin Reserve → Ty Gwyn Teahouse (Gaiman) → Return to Puerto Madryn

As we boarded our tour vehicle, the guide handed out maps to help us visualize our journey. Puerto Madryn, a coastal city along the Golfo Nuevo, bustled with life, yet within minutes of departure, we were on the open road, surrounded by Patagonia’s vast, windswept terrain. The city, known for its aluminum industry, deep-water port, and as a hub for eco-tourism, quickly faded behind us as we ventured south on National Route 3, heading toward the Punta Tombo Penguin Reserve.

The guide emphasized Patagonia’s remoteness, describing it as a “land of extremes”—where there are fewer than two people per square kilometer. The farther we drove, the more evident this became. The cityscape gave way to an arid, open expanse, where the land stretched endlessly in every direction. The road ahead was long—about two and a half hours to our main destination.

① Rest Stop Along Route 3 – A Break in the Wilderness

Location: AGUSFED S.A., RN3 km 1453, U9100 Trelew, Chubut, Argentina
Time Spent: 15 minutes

About one hour and fifteen minutes into our journey, we arrived at AGUSFED S.A., a small roadside convenience store and rest stop, a welcome sight in the vast, arid landscape of Patagonia. This stop provided basic facilities, a chance to stretch our legs, and a selection of chocolates, biscuits, water, and soft drinks—a brief but much-needed break before continuing toward Punta Tombo.

As we stepped outside, the wind carried a chill, despite the bright sun overhead. The terrain surrounding the stop was barren yet striking—low shrubs, rolling hills, and a sky so vast it made the landscape feel even more isolated. After a quick refresh, we continued on, anticipating our next encounter—the largest Magellanic penguin colony in the world.

② Punta Tombo Nature Reserve

Location: Punta Tombo Nature Reserve, (44°02′ S, 65°11′ W), Chubut, Argentina
Time Spent: 2 hours

As we approached Punta Tombo, the landscape gradually transformed. The vast, unbroken desert gave way to low shrubs and sandy patches, leading us toward the rocky coastline. Around two and a half hours after departing Puerto Madryn, we finally arrived at one of the largest Magellanic penguin colonies in the world.

At the entrance to the reserve, Billy handled the park fees while we took advantage of the facilities before setting out on our walk. Our guide provided a brief orientation on Magellanic penguins, explaining their behavior, nesting habits, and the importance of staying on designated trails to protect their fragile ecosystem.

We began our journey along a gravel path, winding through the dry, open landscape where sparse vegetation provided limited cover. At first, we saw only a few scattered penguins, moving between their burrows and occasionally pausing to curiously inspect us. As we progressed, their numbers steadily increased—soon, penguins were waddling across the trail, standing in small social groups, and nesting right beside the wooden walkways.

Our guide explained the penguins’ life cycle, noting that by February, most chicks had already shed their soft gray feathers and were beginning their migration into the ocean. Meanwhile, adult penguins, identifiable by their distinctive black bands around their necks, stood guard near their burrows, overseeing their young before their departure.

As the gravel path transitioned into elevated boardwalks, we gained a clearer view of the colony. These wooden walkways allowed us to pass over the delicate terrain where penguins had dug their shallow nesting burrows, ensuring both visitor access and habitat preservation. Eventually, we arrived at a stunning overlook—a cliffside platform with sweeping views of the beach below.

From this vantage point, we saw hundreds of penguins scattered along the shore—some braving the waves, diving into the ocean with graceful precision, while others stood in tight-knit clusters on the sand. It was a breathtaking scene, showcasing the delicate balance between land and sea that has sustained these penguins for generations. However, access to the beach itself was restricted, ensuring the protection of the colony and its habitat.

Almost as soon as we had arrived, it was time to turn back. With time running out, we retraced our steps at a brisk pace toward the bus, making only a brief detour to the ranger station overlook for one last glimpse of the landscape. From there, we continued swiftly, ensuring we made it back on schedule for our visit to Ty Gwyn, the traditional Welsh teahouse awaiting us in Gaiman.

③ A Taste of Welsh Heritage

Location: Ty Gwyn Teahouse, 9 de Julio 111, Gaiman, Chubut, Argentina
Time Spent: 1 hour

As we approached Gaiman, a distinct change in the landscape emerged—the dry, barren Patagonian steppe gave way to a lush green valley. The secret to this transformation lay in the Chubut River, the only significant water source in the region, which had allowed for the development of one of Patagonia’s earliest European settlements. Our guide pointed out the first irrigation canal, built in 1867, which enabled agriculture to flourish here.

This small town, nestled in the river valley, held a fascinating history. It was one of the first and most successful Welsh settlements in Argentina, established by immigrants seeking to preserve their culture, language, and traditions far from British rule. The red dragon of Wales fluttered proudly on flags outside buildings, marking this as a place where Welsh identity remained deeply rooted, despite being thousands of miles from its homeland.

Our stop included a visit to a traditional Welsh tea house, where we experienced a classic afternoon tea service. Inside, the walls were adorned with photographs of Welsh settlers, antique teapots, and even old newspaper clippings in both Spanish and Welsh. The table was laid out with an assortment of homemade scones, fruit tarts, buttered bread, and the famous “torta negra” (black cake), a dense, sweet dessert brought over by the settlers.

As we sipped our Welsh tea, the guide explained how the Argentine government had encouraged European immigration to Patagonia, seeing the Welsh as ideal settlers to help populate and develop the remote southern lands. The Welsh, in turn, had sought a place where they could speak their language freely and practice their customs without interference. Unlike earlier Spanish explorers, who had struggled to establish settlements here, the Welsh developed a cooperative relationship with the indigenous Tehuelche people, learning survival techniques in the harsh environment.

Today, Gaiman remains a cultural landmark, attracting visitors from around the world, including members of the British royal family—most notably Princess Diana, who visited in 1995 and enjoyed tea at the very establishment where we sat.

After tea, we took a short walk through a few streets in town, though there were not many gift or souvenir shops—it was simply an everyday town with homes and businesses. While it lacked a strong commercial tourist presence, the visit still provided a fascinating glimpse into this unexpected pocket of Welsh heritage in Argentina.

With our stomachs full and a newfound appreciation for this unexpected piece of Wales in Argentina, we boarded the bus for our return journey to Puerto Madryn.
