This cultural excursion from Corinto featured a visit to Cortijo El Rosario for a traditional equestrian show and insight into Nicaragua’s ranching heritage.
This countryside excursion visited a traditional working estate in northwestern Nicaragua, offering a cultural showcase of horsemanship and rural life. Guests toured the Cortijo El Rosario grounds, enjoyed a seated performance by Andalusian horses, and sampled local refreshments. Walking was minimal, with most activities centered on the estate’s main arena.
🐎 Riding into Nicaragua’s Ranch Country
After disembarking in the port city of Corinto, our group boarded an air-conditioned motorcoach for a short inland transfer to Cortijo El Rosario, a private equestrian estate located in Nicaragua’s Chinandega Department. The journey took approximately 20 to 30 minutes, following paved rural highways bordered by dry scrub vegetation and intermittent views of the Maribios volcanic chain, a prominent geological feature in the region.
🌾 Regional Insight: Chinandega is one of Nicaragua’s most agriculturally productive departments, known for sugarcane, peanuts, and cattle ranching—making it a fitting setting for working estates like Cortijo El Rosario.
Upon reaching the entrance to the estate, we were welcomed by uniformed staff and offered chilled refreshments. The weather was typical of Nicaragua’s Pacific lowlands during the dry season—clear skies, warm temperatures, and a steady inland breeze. The group consisted of around 30 participants, a manageable size that allowed for efficient coordination without crowding. Entry procedures were informal and well-organized, setting the stage for a structured yet relaxed visit to a working ranch.

🎭 Stop 1: Equestrian skill and ceremonial tradition
📍 Location: Cortijo El Rosario, Chinandega, Nicaragua ⏳ Time Spent: Approximately 90 minutes
Before the formal presentation began, guests were invited to explore the stable complex. This active facility houses a large number of horses trained for both performance and instruction. Visitors could observe the animals up close and gain a sense of the daily operations of a working Nicaraguan ranch. The stable environment was practical and unembellished, with open stalls, feed areas, and the typical sights and sounds of livestock management—including the presence of stable flies, which are common in tropical agricultural zones.
A farrier demonstration took place during this initial portion of the visit. Estate staff explained the fundamentals of equine hoof care while showcasing how metal horseshoes are shaped, fitted, and secured. The process was carried out on-site, offering guests a firsthand look at an essential ranching skill rarely seen by outsiders.

The main event—the Equestrian Show—was held in a custom-designed open-air arena. Seating was arranged along the perimeter of the ring, offering clear sightlines from nearly every vantage point.

The show itself consisted of a sequence of choreographed routines drawn from both classical dressage and regional Nicaraguan traditions. The horses were outfitted in ceremonial tack and decorative headdresses, reflecting the cultural significance of equestrian performance in rural Central America.

Riders executed a variety of precision maneuvers, including elevated trots, synchronized rotations, and controlled direction changes, all performed in a carefully timed sequence.

🎠 Cultural Tip: In Nicaragua, equestrian shows often incorporate “alta escuela” maneuvers—a legacy of Spanish colonial cavalry displays that emphasized precision riding and horse discipline.
🍽️ Stop 2: La Palapa lunch and folkloric dance
📍 Location: La Palapa Reception Pavilion, Cortijo El Rosario, Chinandega, Nicaragua ⏳ Time Spent: Approximately 1 hour
Following the equestrian performance, guests were directed to La Palapa, a spacious open-air pavilion used for dining and special events. Although estate transportation was available for the short transfer, many opted to walk the well-maintained five-minute path on foot. The route offered views of the surrounding property, including pastures and internal training areas. One such paddock was actively in use during our visit, with local children receiving riding instruction as part of an equestrian development program hosted by the estate.

Upon arrival at La Palapa, guests were invited to partake in a buffet-style lunch featuring a variety of traditional Nicaraguan dishes. The menu included grilled chicken, beef, and pork, accompanied by fried plantains, seasoned black beans, and freshly made corn tortillas—staples of rural Nicaraguan cuisine. The open-air setting allowed for ample ventilation, with communal tables situated beneath a high thatched roof constructed in the local style.
As the meal progressed, a group of local performers presented a live folkloric dance performance in the dining area. Dressed in brightly colored costumes, the dancers performed choreographed routines set to traditional music, offering a cultural complement to the culinary experience and showcasing elements of Nicaragua’s heritage.

🎭 Cultural Legacy: Traditional Nicaraguan dance styles, such as El Güegüense and Palo de Mayo, reflect a fusion of Indigenous, African, and Spanish influences dating back to the colonial period.
🚇 Stop 3: Railcar lodging and carriage ride
📍 Location: Carriage Station and Gift Shop Area, Cortijo El Rosario, Chinandega, Nicaragua ⏳ Time Spent: Approximately 30 minutes
Adjacent to the La Palapa pavilion, guests had the option to participate in ahorse-drawn carriage ride offered for a modest additional fee. The carriages, open-air and shaded, followed a designated path around the perimeter of the estate. We boarded one of the carriages and spent approximately 25 minutes touring the grounds. The route passed through active pastureland, fenced riding zones, and internal service areas, offering a broader view of the estate’s layout and operational scale.

Following the carriage ride, we visited the estate’s gift shop, where we came upon a pair of vintage railcars displayed on a short section of track nearby. These decommissioned train cars had been repurposed as stationary lodging accommodations, complete with wooden interiors, modest furnishings, and sleeping compartments.

Although they were not open for overnight stays at the time of our visit, the railcars functioned as a static exhibit showcasing the estate’s creative integration of historical structures.

🚂 Railway Heritage: Nicaragua’s western rail network once transported cotton and rum from Chinandega to the port of Corinto, with some railcars like those at the estate dating back to the early 20th century.
💙 Our Favorite Moment
Taking the horse-drawn carriage ride around the estate gave us the chance to view the full grounds at a comfortable pace. It was a quiet, relaxing moment we shared independently, away from the group, bringing the day to a peaceful close.
