Villefranche-sur-Mer, France • May 15, 2016

🌅 A Day Between the Sea and the Stones

Our shore excursion—A Day in Nice & EZE Discovery—began with a tender transfer from Brilliance of the Seas to the port of Villefranche-sur-Mer, a deep-water anchorage favored by cruise lines for its calm bay and Riviera access. After disembarking at the tender pier, we climbed a short but steep path to reach our motorcoach, where our French guide organized the group of 42 participants.

Departing Villefranche, the bus ascended a winding hillside route bordered by 17th-century fortifications, including Fort Mont Alban and the outer walls of Citadel Saint-Elme. These defensive structures overlook panoramic views of the Côte d’Azur and marked the beginning of our drive toward Nice.

Stop 1: Guided Walk into Central Nice

Location: Vieux Nice, Promenade du Paillon, Nice, France
Time Spent: Approximately 2 hours

Our first stop was the city of Nice, the historic and administrative capital of the French Riviera. The motorcoach dropped us off near the Théâtre de Verdure, an outdoor performance venue situated along the Promenade du Paillon, a landscaped greenway that extends through the city center and links key urban spaces.

The Promenade du Paillon park connects many prominent cultural buildings and event locations.

Upon arrival, our walking tour commenced with the distribution of personal audio headsets, allowing each participant to follow the live commentary provided by the guide. The route began within the promenade itself, a 12-hectare linear park completed in 2013 and planted with Mediterranean flora.

Artists show their work, and families enjoy the green space at the promenade.

We moved east along the promenade until reaching Place Masséna, where we crossed the tramline and entered the historic district of Vieux Nice. Along the way, visitors passed public art and statues, including a notable bronze replica of Michelangelo’s David that anchors a garden space amid olive trees.

The prominent statue of David anchors the grounds of the local theatre.

Stop 2: Walking Tour of Vieux Nice

Location: Cours Saleya, Old Town Nice, France
Time Spent:
Approximately 45 minutes

After crossing Place Masséna, we entered Vieux Nice—an older urban core marked by narrower corridors, denser architecture, and a distinct shift in street scale.

Immediately, the scenery shifted—wider boulevards gave way to narrow, winding alleys flanked by tall, colorful buildings with weathered shutters and faded plaster façades.

Our route focused on the Cours Saleya quarter, one of the most frequented areas within the old district. The streets were bustling with both local residents and international visitors, giving the area a constant undercurrent of movement and exchange. Market stalls, small cafés, and artisan vendors lined the walkways, while overhead awnings shaded pedestrians from the midday sun.

Cours Saleya has long functioned as a public market space. While many vendors today cater to visitors, the setting still retains echoes of its traditional role as a commercial hub for produce, flowers, and handcrafted goods. The surrounding architecture—painted in ochre, salmon, and terracotta tones—retains strong Genoese and Provençal influences, reflective of the city’s blend of coastal and inland cultural roots.

As we moved through the quarter, the guide provided commentary on how the urban plan of Vieux Nice reflects the city’s early expansion beyond its original Roman foundations. The walk passed through open civic squares such as Place du Palais, home to the city’s neoclassical courthouse.

Stop 3: Visit to Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate

Location: Place Rossetti, Old Nice, France
Time Spent:
Approximately 10 minutes

Continuing through the streets of Vieux Nice, our group arrived at Place Rossetti, a central square known for its vibrant atmosphere and architectural landmarks. Dominating the square is the Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate, the principal Roman Catholic cathedral of Nice and the seat of the Diocese of Nice.

Constructed between 1650 and 1699, the cathedral is a notable example of Baroque architecture in the region. Its façade, added in the 19th century, features classical elements, while the interior boasts richly decorated chapels, intricate stucco work, and a prominent dome adorned with colorful glazed tiles.

With a brief window before the commencement of a scheduled Latin-language Mass, our guide allowed the group a quick visit inside. The sanctuary, though modest in size, displayed an ornate altar with gilded detailing, sculptural elements, and devotional statuary typical of ecclesiastical architecture in southern France.

Parishioners were already gathering for the service, and within moments of our entry, staff discreetly asked us to conclude our visit. We respectfully exited after quietly observing the space and capturing a few unobtrusive photographs of the interior.

Stop 4: Marché aux Fleurs and Café Lou Pilha Leva

Location: Marché aux Fleurs, Cours Saleya, Nice, France
Time Spent: Approximately 45 minutes

Departing the church, our group proceeded to the nearby Marché aux Fleurs—an open-air flower and produce market that runs parallel to the seafront along Cours Saleya. The market is famed for its vibrant stalls displaying locally grown blooms, artisanal goods, fresh vegetables, and seasonal fruits, and has operated continuously in some form since 1897. A strong fragrance of cut flowers and herbs filled the air as we entered the covered arcades.

On this particular day, an official event involving the Lord Mayor of Nice was taking place in an adjacent square, prompting an increased police presence and cordoned sections that altered the normal pedestrian flow in the market area.

During our allotted free time, we returned to Lou Pilha Leva, a casual, counter-service café we had passed earlier at Place Centrale. The eatery is popular among locals for serving Niçoise street food specialties such as socca (a chickpea flour pancake) and pan bagnat (a sandwich made with tuna, anchovies, and Provençal vegetables). We attempted to order a savory crepe-like dish favored by patrons at neighboring tables—though the language barrier led to some initial confusion, we eventually succeeded and found open seating in the café’s shaded outdoor area.

While the food itself was satisfying, the surrounding social atmosphere proved less welcoming. Several local patrons visibly avoided sitting near us—some even relocating and declining to share a table. A similar experience occurred at a nearby gelateria, where the line and server interactions left us feeling somewhat dismissed, until a younger attendant offered more welcoming assistance.

After reuniting with the tour group, we resumed our route through the narrow residential lanes behind the Cours Saleya, continuing toward the coast. Emerging onto the Promenade des Anglais, we arrived at Nice’s iconic pebble beach—broad, clean, and sunlit. The Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels) spread before us in brilliant hues of turquoise and cobalt, forming one of the most photographed waterfronts along the Côte d’Azur.

Stop 5: Colline du Château Lookout

Location: Promenade des Anglais & Colline du Château, Nice, France
Time Spent: Approximately 40 minutes

From the seafront promenade, our group ascended toward Colline du Château, or Castle Hill, a prominent limestone outcrop rising 300 feet above sea level between the Old Town and the Port of Nice. No structures remain of the original château, which was dismantled by order of Louis XIV in 1706. Today, the hill serves as a scenic viewpoint and landscaped public park.

Access is available either via a modern elevator built into the base tunnel or by a stairway consisting of zigzagging stone steps and shaded rest points. Due to a long queue at the elevator, we chose to climb on foot. About halfway up, we reached a west-facing terrace offering unobstructed views across the Baie des Anges, with the rooftops of Vieux Nice stretching toward the coastline below.

We paused at this mid-level platform to rest and take photographs. Although we did not continue to the summit, the lower terrace provided ample vantage for appreciating the expanse of Nice’s cityscape and the arc of the Mediterranean shoreline. Despite not reaching the summit, the elevation provided ample photographic and scenic reward—highlighting the scale of the city and the sweep of the Mediterranean beyond.

After descending the same stairway, we returned to the Cours Saleya district and regrouped with our tour at the Flower Market. From there, it was a 12-minute walk to the coach parking area near the Théâtre de Verdure, concluding the Nice portion of the itinerary.

Scenic Drive & Photo Stop: Moyenne Corniche Coastal Highway

Location: Moyenne Corniche, Alpes-Maritimes, France
Time Spent: Approximately 30 minutes (including 10-minute photo stop)

After concluding the walking portion of our tour in Nice, we reboarded the motorcoach and began a scenic eastbound drive through the outskirts of the city. As we passed through residential neighborhoods, the onion-domed silhouette of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas came into view. Though only visible from the road, the structure stood out prominently—commissioned in 1903 and consecrated in 1912, it remains one of the most significant Eastern Orthodox churches in Western Europe.

Leaving the city behind, our route followed the Moyenne Corniche, one of three historic roadways that hug the cliffs of the French Riviera. This middle-elevation road was carved into the mountainside during the early 20th century to link Nice with Monaco. As the motorcoach ascended and curved along the rocky contours, we gained sweeping views of the Baie des Anges and Villefranche-sur-Mer from above.

📸 Roughly halfway through the drive, our guide arranged a 10-minute photo stop at a panoramic terrace, offering unobstructed views of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the tiled rooftops of Villefranche, and the Brilliance of the Seas anchored in the bay.

A permanent ceramic orientation table highlighted key coastal landmarks, allowing guests to better understand the geography and snap wide-angle photos of the harbor and surrounding hills.

The drive resumed with even more striking views: yachts drifting offshore, terraced villages tucked into green hillsides, and limestone promontories rising from the shoreline—a scene that reinforced the Riviera’s reputation for cinematic beauty.

Stop 6: Hilltop Village of Èze

Location: Èze Village, Alpes-Maritimes, France
Time Spent:
Approximately 1 hour

Our next scheduled stop was the cliffside village of Èze, a medieval settlement known for its dramatic elevation and panoramic Mediterranean views. Located approximately 1,400 feet above sea level, the village is situated on a rocky outcrop between Nice and Monaco along the Moyenne Corniche. As Èze is closed to vehicle traffic, our motorcoach parked at a designated lot just below the village gates. From there, all visitors were required to ascend on foot.

The climb was steep and physically demanding, with uneven cobblestones, narrow passageways, and intermittent steps that tested balance and stamina—especially under the midday sun. Once inside the fortified perimeter, we explored a compact network of stone alleys, vaulted corridors, and tiered lanes, some of which date back to Roman times. Many of the original fortifications have since been integrated into the modern-day pedestrian layout, preserving the site’s defensive architecture.

Despite the narrow paths and steady incline, the interior rewarded visitors with layered views of the Côte d’Azur, hidden garden lookouts, artisan boutiques, and small cafés embedded within the centuries-old façades. The preserved nature of the town—structurally and architecturally—makes it one of the most scenic stops along the Riviera.

Approaching the village’s upper tier, our guide paused at the Église Notre-Dame de l’Assomption, an 18th-century Baroque parish church distinguished by its ochre-colored exterior and bell tower.

Just beyond the church lay the entrance to the Jardin Exotique, a landscaped botanical garden with one of the region’s highest public lookout points.

At this stage, participants were given a choice: continue independently to the summit trail via the garden, or return with the guide to the coach for a scheduled visit to Parfumerie Fragonard. With time limited and many already fatigued, we opted for the second option and began the descent back to the parking area.

Stop 7: Parfumerie Fragonard Factory Tour

Location: Parfumerie Fragonard, Route de la Moyenne Corniche, Èze, France
Time Spent: Approximately 40 minutes

After regrouping near the base of Èze Village, our group reboarded the motorcoach for a short 1.5-mile drive to the Fragonard Perfume Factory, located just below the village on the Route de la Moyenne Corniche. This site functions as both a production facility and a visitor education center for one of France’s best-known perfume houses. Fragonard’s original factory was established in Grasse in 1926, and this Èze location continues to serve as a satellite site for demonstrations and sales.

Upon entering, we were welcomed into a two-level exhibition space where a staff guide led us through the key stages of fragrance creation. Although active manufacturing does not take place on Sundays, the tour included detailed explanations and demonstrations of how essential oils are distilled, blended, and aged. Special emphasis was placed on the role of the “nose”—a master perfumer trained to identify and combine hundreds of aromatic ingredients with exceptional precision.

Display areas featured archival equipment, copper distillation stills, and educational panels illustrating the sourcing of raw materials like jasmine, orange blossom, and rose, many of which are grown locally in Provence. The company’s commitment to artisanal techniques and regional sourcing was a consistent theme throughout the visit.

At the conclusion of the guided tour, we entered the on-site boutique, where guests were invited to test and purchase Fragonard’s products—including perfumes, soaps, lotions, and home fragrances—at prices exclusive to factory visitors. Regardless of purchase, all Royal Caribbean excursion participants received a complimentary gift: an 8 ml eau de toilette sample in Jasmin, along with a wrapped bar of soap.

🚇 Return to Ship

Following our visit to Parfumerie Fragonard, the group boarded the motorcoach for the return journey to Villefranche-sur-Mer. The route retraced the Moyenne Corniche, offering a final round of sea views and elevated vistas before descending back toward the sheltered harbor.

Upon arrival at the tender dock, Royal Caribbean staff coordinated the embarkation process, guiding passengers onto small transfer boats for the 10–15 minute ride back to the Brilliance of the Seas, anchored just offshore.

By the end of the tour, we had logged over 12,000 steps across historic town centers, hillside villages, coastal promenades, and artisan workshops—concluding a full day of structured exploration and cultural immersion along the Côte d’Azur.
