About This Experience
This countryside tour from Helsinki with Holland America Line paired a motorcoach drive through Finland’s rural landscapes with a guided visit to Porvoo Old Town. Stops included the Church of St. Sigfrid, artisan wall shops, and panoramic countryside views. Light walking required along cobblestones and village streets.
🧭 A Quiet Escape into Finland’s Countryside
Set beyond the city limits of Helsinki, the Porvoo Town & Country tour provided a welcomed shift in pace—a chance to experience Finland’s quiet countryside and historic charm. After docking in the Port of Helsinki with Norwegian Cruise Line, we chose this particular excursion for its unique focus on local culture and everyday life outside the capital.
The itinerary promised a well-balanced mix: a visit to a centuries-old village church, a stop at a family-run horse farm, and time to explore the old town of Porvoo, known as Finland’s second-oldest settlement. What appealed to us most was the opportunity to see a more personal, lived-in side of the country—rural landscapes, traditional architecture, and small-town character—all accessible without extra travel complications. It was an ideal option for those wanting a relaxed, culturally grounded experience within a single day.
🚍 Leaving the City Behind
We began our morning with a quiet meetup in the Stardust Lounge, one of the ship’s more peaceful gathering spots. As the first light of day broke over Helsinki, we boarded a small motorcoach waiting just outside.
Soon we were rolling through the outskirts of the city, leaving behind the bustle of the port. A gentle mist clung to the roadside birches, and the crisp morning air lightly fogged the windows. As we looked out at the passing farmland and quiet woods, the scenery took on a timeless quality—like slipping into a slower, older version of ourselves.
⛪ Stop 1: Church of St. Sigfrid
📍 Location: Church of St. Sigfrid, Iso Kylätie 1, 01150 Sipoo, Finland
⏳ Time Spent: Approximately 30 minutes
❌ Entry Tip: Sipoo Old Church is closed to visitors on Sundays, and guides may not enter during services. If a service is in progress, expect a brief exterior commentary only.
Our first stop took us to the small village of Sipoo, where the Church of St. Sigfrid quietly watched over its surroundings as it had for centuries. Constructed between 1450 and 1454, the church was a sturdy stone structure with a sharply pitched wooden shingle roof—simple, enduring, and unmistakably medieval. The exterior blended into the landscape with a kind of humble grace, as if it had always belonged there.

🛐 Historical Note: The Church of St. Sigfrid is named after an English missionary credited with spreading Christianity in Scandinavia during the 11th century.
Inside, the space was cool and spare, lit softly by narrow windows that cast pale streaks of sunlight across the stone floor. The interior was free of excess, except for a single striking feature: an elaborately carved pulpit added in the 1600s. With its intricate woodwork and aged patina, it provided a contrast to the otherwise restrained design and offered a glimpse of artistry shaped by generations past.

Outside, we walked slowly through the old graveyard, where many of the headstones dated to the World War II era. Moss and lichen crept over the stones, softening their outlines. The air felt heavy with memory, and despite—or perhaps because of—the simplicity of the setting, it was deeply moving.
🐎 Stop 2: Savijärvi Horse Farm & Mansion
📍 Location: Savijärvi Gård, Savijärventie 74, 01150 Sipoo, Finland
⏳ Time Spent: Approximately 1 hour
The next stop brought us to the tranquil grounds of Savijärvi Horse Farm, a well-kept estate surrounded by green pastures and gently sloping fields. This family-run farm has built a reputation for its championship show horses, and as we stepped off the bus, we were immediately drawn to a live training session already underway. In the paddock, sleek, powerful horses moved in practiced rhythm—each gait and turn revealing the deep bond between animal and trainer.

🐎 Local Insight: Savijärvi’s championship horses often compete in dressage events across Europe, and the farm has trained horses for Finnish national teams.
Following the demonstration, we were invited into the family’s private home—a warm and welcoming space that balanced elegance with everyday comfort. A long buffet table had been arranged on the back terrace, offering a spread of soft Finnish cakes alongside bowls of rhubarb compote, mixed berries, and a rich caramel sauce to drizzle as we liked. Hot coffee and a selection of teas rounded out the offering, and we gathered on the terrace to enjoy our treats against the quiet countryside backdrop.

Inside, we passed through rooms adorned with gleaming trophies and photographs from international competitions—a testament to the farm’s legacy. The décor was understated but thoughtfully arranged, reflecting both rural life and a clear pride in their achievements.

After our snack, we explored the barns and training facilities, where we saw more horses and peered into the day-to-day workings of the farm. Just outside, a row of small mailboxes caught our attention—each one hand-painted and designed to resemble the nearby farmhouses. It was a charming, almost playful touch that most certainly captured the personality of the place.

🏘️ Stop 3: The Old Town of Porvoo
📍 Location: Old Porvoo, Jokikatu 35, 06100 Porvoo, Finland
⏳ Time Spent: Approximately 1 hour
Our final stop brought us to Porvoo, one of Finland’s oldest towns and a place that seemed to have stepped gently out of another era. Established in 1346, the town rests along a hillside above the Porvoonjoki River, its streets laid with uneven cobblestones and lined with colorful wooden houses. Though small in scale—just a few main roads winding upward—it was rich in atmosphere, with every turn revealing a new detail worth lingering over.

🎨 Cultural Tip: Porvoo’s Town Hall is the oldest in Finland still in its original location—built in 1764, it’s now a museum highlighting Finnish civic history.
We wandered at our own pace through the tightly clustered streets, browsing local boutiques tucked into buildings that had clearly stood for generations. The storefronts offered a curated mix of handmade goods, and with the narrow streets relatively quiet, it was easy to take our time and soak in the town’s charm.

Before heading back, we found a spot outside Paulig Coffee Roasters Café and settled in with cups of freshly brewed Finnish coffee. The sky had turned overcast, but the muted light only made the setting more peaceful. As we sipped and watched the flow of locals and tourists pass by, it was one of those rare moments in travel where everything felt exactly right.
☕ Design Detail: Paulig is one of Finland’s most iconic coffee brands, founded in 1876—its Porvoo café blends contemporary Nordic interior style with a legacy of roasting excellence.

🛍️ Shopping Opportunity: Plenty of Artisan shops in Old Porvoo
🚶 Exploring on Our Own: The Walk Back
📝 Independent Travelers Note: Guests who choose to be dropped off in downtown Helsinki are responsible for making their own way back to the pier.
Rather than return directly to the cruise port, we asked our guide to drop us off in central Helsinki. A handful of fellow passengers—five couples in total—decided to do the same, making it a shared little off-script adventure. A light drizzle had started to fall again, but no one seemed bothered. Umbrellas went up, jackets were zipped, and we all set off on foot.

The walk back to the ship took just under an hour, winding through Helsinki’s quieter streets and public spaces. It was a chance to see the city at our own pace—no schedule, no commentary, just a gentle wander through its urban rhythm.
We walked alongside a group of travelers who were photographing something unexpected: manhole covers. At first, we hadn’t noticed them, but their interest made us stop and look. Each one was unique—some with detailed crests, others with abstract designs—adding a layer of artistry to the everyday infrastructure. It was a small but memorable detail, the kind of thing that might have gone unnoticed if not for the curious hobbies of others.
💙 Favorite Moment:
Standing beneath the shingled roof of a 15th-century church, sampling Finnish rhubarb and caramel in a private farmhouse, and sipping coffee along Porvoo’s cobbled lanes—each offered its own quiet magic.
